When my son was a baby, I attended a Bible Study while my husband stayed home with our son, dubbed "Dad and Dude Day", those days are long gone and in need of a refresh, so I was thrilled to get a chance to review the Manhood Journey Father's Starter Kit from Manhood Journey & City on a Hill Studio.

What is the Manhood Journey Father Starter Kit from City on a Hill?

We received a nice packet that contained a copy of the book Wise Guys, a DVD, and two journal style books. One is in a group discussion format, and the other is more of an individual one-on-one set up. It also contained a packet of 10 Map brochures of their journey together. The information included is intended to be a step-by-step six-week guide for fathers to lead their sons in manhood mentorship. It is written in a non-denominational, Bible-based manner.

The program is intended to take six weeks and to create a special bonding time with father and sons ages 8-17.

The Wise Guys book is basically an instructional manual for men who want to live in wisdom. It is written by Kent Evans and contains 17 easy-to-read chapters that cover:

  1. Figure yourself out
  2. Encourage relentlessly
  3. Always be asking
  4. Correct gently
  5. Learn from action
  6. Follow the sprinters
  7. Welcome kindly
  8. Exercise tangible grace
  9. Finish strong
  10. Ditch the cynicism
  11. Ask artfully
  12. Know when to let go
  13. Pray spontaneously
  14. Tap shoulders
  15. command calmly
  16. Sign up, pitch in
  17. Simply excel

The Manhood Journey Embarking 1 on 1 book covers six weeks of study:

  1. Preparing for the journey
  2. Setting out on the journey
  3. Relying on the compass
  4. Seeking guidance along the way
  5. Encountering others along the journey
  6. We have embarked
Each week begins with a word to dad and continues with segments that follow the guidelines of the five foundational concepts of TRUST God, KNOW his Word, PRAY fervently, BUILD relationships, and SERVE others. The sections include building, knowing, serving and talking. There are tips for dad along the way, segments that show him exactly what to say, digging deeper sections, and, of course, scripture.

The group guide, Manhood journey Embarking Group Guide, differs in that it is geared toward using it with a group, so it offers a welcome, activities, group prayer time, and homework for fathers and sons. It also has plenty of space for notes.

The DVD contains the introductory videos for each week that seemed to be geared toward the leader of the study more than the son to watch, though there were some bonus features from Not a Fan and a trailer from the movie Woodlawn/

The Maprochures came in a pack of 10, to use with a group, but helps the child mark his journey.

How Did We Use It?

It was time to make time for a refresh of Dad and Dude Days. I loved this idea! My husband looked over the kit and began by reading the book that came with it. He then sat down with my son to get started. My son is 16, so he is heading for the older end of the spectrum that the program is intended for but my husband and I figured it is better to start late with our son than never. The hardest part of using this was finding time when both my husband and my son were available to sit together. Once the two of them were actually in the same room at the same time and without sisters or mom around, they both embraced the idea.

What Did We Think?

In today's society and culture, it may be controversial for a woman to admit that there is a place for men and their mentorship of their sons. But, here I am saying I think this is very important.

One important feature my husband wanted to point out that he loved was the scripture

First off, my husband who rarely ever reads anything because of time constraints, actually chose to start reading the book. He said he thought it was a really good book. The kit's journals and information is presented in a way that younger adolesccents would find inviting. However, my 16-year-old was not too old for it either.  Though, the map is really geared more toward the younger set. I love the idea of this program that guides the father in leading the son into biblical manhood concepts. While the one-on-one journal format was more appropriate for their one-on-one time, I also found that the group journal had some interesting information as well, including links to videos for activities or demonstrations such as one that asks the group to fill one container with rocks of different sizes. The point behind it is that you must first put in the five larger rocks (Trust God, Know his Word, Pray fervently, Build relationships, and Serve others)  to set the foundation, and then the smaller rock will fall into place.
