I was thrilled to get a chance to review The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls from WorthyKids/Ideals which is the first TWO books in the series:
The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls: The Beginning (Book #1)
The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls: Race to the Ark (Book #2)
What is The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls?
The author, M.J. Thomas is a graduate of Liberty University where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Biblical Studies. He named the characters after his son, a niece, and their dog. He began writing books for children when he wanted to provide books for his son to teach the Bible in a fun, engaging manner and found none.
SUMMARIZE THE STORIES
The books are both of a time travel feel. The main characters include archeologist Uncle Solomon and the children Peter, Mary, and their dog Hank. The premise for both books is that they discover secret scrolls. These scrolls carry them back to the days of creation (Book 1) where they hear, "Let there be light!" while learning that God Made Everything, and Noah's Ark (Book 2) where they almost don't make it back to the boat in time to get back to the present day time because they journey off into town to find a part for a broken hinge on the ark's door. They encounter biblical characters that up until now, they have only heard or read about. In the hidden scrolls books, however, the chldren and the dog come face to face with the first creations and, in the second book, Noah's sons.
To keep the reader rivoted on the edge of their seats, there is more than just time travel involved. They must also solve the secret of the scrolls or find themselves trapped in history forever.
I received two physical books, both paperback and both small, hand-held size. As you might expect from the titles, the first book takes the reader back to the time of creation, and the second book explores the time of Noah's Ark.

How Did We Use It?
I showed the books to my 10 year old, and being the elephant lover that she is, immediately noticed the elephant on the cover. Of course, this piqued her interest, and she picked up Book 1 to read. The books are intended to be read by early readers from age 6 to 9, so they were easy for her to read but not because of weak content, but rather the size of the print and style of writing kept her engaged without challenge to her reading skills.
She easily finished reading quickly. Gone are the days of my being able to read aloud stories, which I actually enjoyed when my children were smaller. Nowadays, they take the book and hide away for awhile until they emerge to discuss what they had read. But, in this case, my daughter actually turned the tables on me and read the book aloud to me, at least a good portion of it she read aloud and then finished the book quietly reading to herself. Afterward, she explained to me some of the highlights.

What Did We Think?
Even though my daughter, at almost age 11, is reading above the level that the books are written for, I love the idea that there are books out there to draw children into wanting to know more about God's Word. I also really appreciate how the author kept the story close to biblical truths and didn't take too many liberties to wander away from the heart of the real-life accounts.
