Teaching my children to read has always been a primary skill I focused on at an early age, since learning to read well is a skill that is at the root of all other learning. So, I was thrilled to get a chance to review a 6-month subscription for one student from Reading Eggs, and to offer you:

a Free 4 week trial! Hurry, though - It expires on November 30, 2017!

ATTN: HOMESCHOOLERS - EXCITING ALL NEW ON THE SITE:

There are some brand new Homeschool Guides JUST RELEASED AND NOW available to download for FREE from the Parent Dashboard. These guides are available for Grades K-2 level. The brand new set of program guides specifically support homeschoolers! These can be downloaded free right now from your parent dashboard on the home page after signing in. They are listed under the Bonus Material.

Reading Eggs just announced that, "the colorful and detailed week-by-week overviews make it easy for you to comprehensively cover and track essential learning outcomes for children in Kindergarten through 2nd Grade. Each printable homeschool guide provides a 36-week teaching and learning sequence for Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. It maps online lessons, books, quizzes and assessments to help you plan your child’s learning every step of the way. Best of all, each guide lists reference books in the Reading Eggspress library to complement online learning, and help you expand new ideas and concepts."

From what I could tell after exploring this new part of the site is that the Language Arts and Math sections correspond to the Reading Eggs program online, showing you which section of the Maps each lesson is derived from, while the Science and Social Studies sections are recommendations for parents to explore on their own within their homeschool using the Reading Eggs Library for online reference and story books.

What is Reading Eggs?

Reading Eggs is an online program designed to help students read well. It has won many awards and uses scientific research to develop the sequenced lessons. The program builds on what they already know and gives them a chance to play, earn eggs to spend in game, and most importantly - To learn to read. The parent/teacher receives reports as the child progresses.

The Reading Eggs portion has the child start by taking an on-screen diagnostic placement test, and then the lessons begin immediately following the test at the level suggested for your child. The lessons take you through a series of on-screen game-like lessons such as recognizing letter sounds in words and clicking on the correct word, dragging and dropping words into sentence boxes, combining sounds to form words, finding ending sounds, or fill-in-the-blanks to build words. The whole time, the child is earning eggs to reach goals. The parent is able to see an onscreen diagnostic report to see how the child is progressing.

There is also access to more than 1,000 online books and Bonus Materials that include videos of "The Eggsperts" who are a team of friends, Sam, Jazz and Tom, using phenomic awareness in several short video series.

The 120 lessons are the core of the program, but there are other elements that make the whole thing more fun.

From the parent/teacher dashboard, you easily see your child's progress.

The Reading Eggspress reports include quite a bit more information:

While the 120 lessons is the core to the program, there are many more places to explore onscreen:

The parent/teacher log in also includes some fun extras, like The Eggsperts that is a series you watch onscreen that is intended to inspire play by using phonemic awareness as you view the videos. It is free with your subscription. This parent/teacher section also has worksheets you can print that go along with each of the lessons. There is also a parent/teacher user guide that is in pdf format that you can print if you prefer. The guide explains how to use the program, describes the different elements of the program and also has an extensive break down overview of the entire curriculum showing the overview of each lesson as well as the spelling words.

There is also a section called MathSeeds (ages 3-9) that helps boost math understanding. Reading Eggs includes access to Reading Eggs Junior (ages 2-4), Reading Eggs (ages 3-7), and Reading Eggspress (ages 7-13, grades 1-6). Since Reading Eggs is online, it makes it extremely portable so long as you have an internet connection. Take it along with you on a laptop to complete lessons as you wait at the doctor or for an older sibling to finish a co-op or dance class or wherever your homeschool life and activities take you.

The child progresses through a series of maps to reach the goals.

How Did We Use It?

I sat down with my now 11-year-old to check it out. She started with a diagnostic test and the lessons started her in the Eggspress level, but I also poked around and checked out the other levels on the site along with the MathSeeds section. I had her do the Reading Eggs program along with her other Language Arts curriculum.

What Did We Think?

At our house, we love Reading Eggs. It has been of a huge help in getting my youngest over the hurdles of reading struggles.I was honestly surprised that her diagnostic test placed her in a lower level of reading than she has previously tested at on her SAT, but I never shrug my shoulders at review or going over a skill until my children master it. The program is easy to use, and the child learns without realizing it since it offers a game-like feel with all of the achievements and bright, inviting graphics. Even if you take issue with screen time learning, the program really does work and doesn't even tout the benefits of the added computer skills the child is learning as they maneuver the mouse and keyboard through the lessons. It's really a well-done online program, but I was especially happy to discover that through the parent/teacher log in, I could print out worksheets as well.
