I was thrilled to get a chance to review Princess Cut from Watchman Pictures. I have two daughters, one teen and a pre-teen, as well as a teenage son, so any influence in terms of relationships and remaining pure for marriage is very welcome here. If it's in the form of a well-done movie, that's all the better as far as I'm concerned.
What is Watchman Pictures and Princess Cut?
Watchman Pictures is the vision of Paul Munger, whose full name means "Humble Watchman". This was no doubt not an accident when his parents chose his name. He has put his direction, purpose and creative dreams to work by attending film, art and media schools before serving on three feature films and several short films including those that promoted a pregnancy center and missions. . . . Fast forward, and enter - Princess Cut starring Ashley Bratcher as Grace Anderson and Joseph Gray as Clint Masters.
Princess Cut was written by Paul and Sheilah Munger, produced and directed by Paul Munger with David Cook as the Line Producer.
Other cast members include:
Rusty Martin, Sr. as the dad Jim Anderson. You may recognize him from War Room or Courageous
Mimi Sagadin as the mom Katherine Anderson.
Rusty Martin, Jr. as the son/brother to Grace, Robert Anderson
Evan Brinkman as the youngest son/brother to Grace, Drew Anderson
Kate MacCallum as Tessa Rigby, Grace's best friend
Cory Assink as Jared Cunningham whom you may recognize from Super Bowl commercials
Jenn Gotzon as Brooke McClaren whom you may recognize as Tricia in Frost/Nixon by Ron Howard
I received a physical DVD with running time 97 minutes.
The movie lasts about an hour and a half. The name of the movie is cleverly titled, at least in my opinion, and the opening scene pretty much gives way to why, but it also has a double meaning of sorts as the film plays out. Grace has her eye on a specific engagement ring with a princess cut diamond. However, as you watch her life unfold, you begin to realize perhaps she's the diamond in the rough, so to speak, who is really a princess cut designed by God and precious, worth waiting for and fighting for.
The movie is well done and ultimately deals with the concept of God-ordained marriages. It takes a different approach than typical messages of why it's important to remain pure before your wedding. It makes you feel what the lead character is going through as she struggles to find a relationship worthy of marriage and goes through the pain of watching her boyfriend, whom she thinks is going to propose, actually propose to someone else, followed by her getting into a relationship where she feels it's on the fast track and out of control, crossing boundaries physically that she is not comfortable with. Finally, she devotes herself to prayer and seeking God's answer in her future. When she gives it all up and seeks God's face is when her knight in shining armour comes along only, it doesn't just let the happy ever after ending play out. There are a couple of twists and unexpected turns that she and her pledged-to-be-married fiance will encounter before it is all said and done.
How Did We Use It?
We made a movie night out of it with the girls. I popped popcorn, and we sat down to watch the movie together. I especially wanted my 16-year-old daughter to watch, and she did.
As I enjoyed watching the movie unfold, I even learned something I never knew before - The Bible sets the precedent for the part in a wedding ceremony where the pastor asks, "Who gives this woman?" And, it's the moment for the dad's big part of saying, "Her mother and I". That comes from:
Jeremiah 29:6 English Standard Version (ESV)
We also had fun watching the Extras that were on the DVD, like the Bloopers and Deleted Scenes. Other additional Extras include The Making of Princess Cut and Behind the Scenes as well as film trailers. The movie is a great launching pad for opening up discussions about relationships as well. There is even a discussion guide on their website that you can follow.

Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease.

What Did We Think?
It was fun to listen to my teen daughter's comments throughout the movie, especially when she recognized several of the books about living single for God, letting God write your story, etc. in the arms of Grace when she was trying to seek God's will for her dating life. It was equally as enjoyable to hear her respond to how the character who portrayed true love treated Grace.
I think the movie was well produced with the perfect cast chosen to play each part. As entertaining as it was to simply watch, I think it could be used with youth groups or individual families to open up some great, meaningful discussions about some very important issues centering around the topic of relationships, purity, marriage, and God's plans for our lives.
