I was thrilled to get a chance to review Love, Honor, and Virtue: Gaining or Regaining a Biblical Attitude Toward Sexuality from Great Waters Press.

I also got to review another book from Great Waters Press entitled No Longer Little: Parenting Tweens with Grace and Hope, so please be sure to read that review as well.

Raising Real Men
Love Honor and Virtue by Hal and Melanie Young

What is Love, Honor, and Virtue: Gaining or Regaining a Biblical Attitude Toward Sexuality?

I received a handheld paperback book that is written with boys from about age 12 to 20's in mind. It covers everything a young man needs to know about staying pure and approaching sexuality from a biblical perspective.

The introduction, 6 chapters and conclusion include chapter titles as follows:

To the Young Men on the Battlefield
Sex Was God's Idea
It's All Connected
The Enemy Perverts God's Design
How Can a Young Man Keep His Way Pure?
Recovering From a Fall
Guys and Girls
The Road Ahead

As you can see, the authors tackle the subject head-on and with the scenario of equipping for battle with the right tools and approaches everything in light of Scripture while painting a beautiful picture of marriage as the reason why God designed intimacy.

At the end of each chapter, there is a summary in bold print that contains a bullet-point style synopsis of what the previous chapter discussed.

At 95 pages, it's a fairly quick read but is packed with intense and important information including the reality of what our young men, a lot younger than you may think, are being exposed to and trying to deal with on a day-to-day basis. The battle is nothing to take lightly, and the authors of this book are not afraid to jump in and discuss every aspect of the fight for a young man to keep himself pure in today's culture.

Truly, it would make an excellent gift for a young man celebrating his transition into manhood, for a young man preparing for marriage, or for a grown male who was probably not properly prepared for manhood himself.

How Did We Use It?

When I received the book, we had been planning a getaway for our anniversary, so I found the perfect setting, on the balcony overlooking the beach, in the hotel lobby overlooking the beach, in the sitting room of the hotel overlooking the beach, at the breakfast table (which didn't overlook the beach), and wherever else I could sneak a peek to sit to read:

After a walk to the beach at high tide, my son's choice of wearing tennis shoes and socks ended with them drying out on the balcony. I couldn't resist a picture capturing this all-too-familiar scene to a mom of a boy (in the background) with the book on how to fight the battle for purity open in the foreground. Somehow, I thought it appropriate.

I tucked the book into my travel bag to read during downtime on our recent trip. I have one son. He just turned 18 and really hasn't pursued any interest in girls yet, so this book was a perfect timing fit for us. I thought it would be a good idea if I read or looked it over first before deciding whether or not it was something he would be open to reading for himself.

What Did We Think?

I love these authors, Hal and Melanie Young. The style of writing is straightforward yet personable and easy to read. I absolutely love that they address this topic in a matter-of-fact way that fits with scriptures they refer to throughout the book. It really is an essential tool for any parent of a young man in today's world and would even make a great reference book for any grown adult male for that matter, as much of the topic addressed was most likely not fully addressed to most as they grew into a man. I really appreciate that the book focuses on everything in light of Scripture and even provides tools of how to change bad habits he may have already fallen into. This offers hope and not judgment.

  1. I am so happy Love, Honor, and Virtue was a blessing to you! I really appreciate that you picked up that it covered topics that aren't typically addressed with young men. That was important to us because it really is marriage education, not just sex education. Our guys need to be prepared for the whole deal that comes in marriage!
