Homeschool Review Crew - Barbour Publishing Kingdom Files

Review, #hsreviews, #KingdomFiles, #BiographiesForKids, Kingdom files; biographies, biographies for kids; Bible stories, who was books; who was series; who is series; who is books; Matt Koceich; Christian books; Christian books for kids; imagine series; imagine books

I was thrilled to get a chance to review two of the books in the Kingdom Files series:

Who Was Jonah?
Who Was Mary, Mother of Jesus?

from Barbour Publishing.

The author of these books is Matt Koceich. I was not familiar with him before, but am now very impressed after having reviewed his work. The book describes him as a father, a husband, and a teacher who lives in Texas.

The Kingdom Files

What is the Kingdom Files from Barbour Publishing?

I received two hand-held sized paperback books - Who Was Jonah? and Who Was Mary, Mother of Jesus?

These books are both set up the same way as the other books in the series. They are separated by:

Fact File - This is where you find information about the Bible character being discussed. It is presented as if you are reading a case file with key tidbits such as Name, Occupation, Years Active, or where they are from. Also included is a mini timeline, a map, and key stats.

Action File - This is the bulk of the story account. The Mary book's Action File contains 50 pages of the Action File story, and the Jonah book contains about 59 pages in the Action File. Each are separated by short, easy-to-read chapters. Mary's book contains 6 short chapters, and Jonah had 9.

Power File - This is where you will find Power Ups which are brief devotional takeways from the story. There are 10 power ups in each book, along with 10 memory verses.

Along the way there are Clue Boxes which are gray-highlighted boxes of text that highlight devotional thoughts and life applications throughout the story.

How Did We Use It?

I'm always looking for fun, interesting supplements to my Bible time with my children. So, I was excited to see these books and introduce them to my youngest daughter who likes solving mysteries. I presented them to her, and then proceeded to explain to her how the book is designed with the different files. I sat down and began reading aloud even though she could have easily read it by herself. Sometimes, reading aloud is what is needed. These books could, however, easily be read independently by the child having them jot down their thoughts to discuss later.

What Did We Think?

These are really well done and holds the interest of the reader. I like the way they are laid out with the different files clearly labeled. I loved the illustrations throughout that weren't overused, and the maps really were nice to give a geographical study element as well. The Power Ups and memory verses are nice and concise and make it easy to learn. I loved how there were 10 Power Ups in each book, so it makes it easy to use the book with definite lessons to reinforce the life applications and devotional aspect and not just speed through the book simply reading it.
