Homeschool Review Crew - The Captain Sun Adventures

Review, #hsreviews, #CaptainSun, #itsCaptainSun, Christian, superhero, Bible, comic book

Maybe your kids are like two of mine, and they really prefer graphic novels or comics over reading merely words on a page. If so, you will understand why I was thrilled to get a chance to review Book 1, Rescue Me! What Superheroes Can Teach Us About the Power of Faith from The Captain Sun Adventures.

The Captain Sun Adventures

What is Rescue Me! What Superheroes Can Teach Us About the Power of Faith from The Captain Sun Adventures?

This particular book is Book 1 in The Captain Sun Adventures.

Captain Sun is a superhero who has a secret identity as a human named Derek Duke. He is really a visitor from another world sent to our world to help the oppressed, defend the weak, and uphold justice wherever he is needed.

The author, Bryce Morgan, who is also a pastor at Way of Grace Church in Buckeye, Arizona, and illustrator Mitch Martin, a graphic artist living in Canada, do a great job of pairing together a comic book about a superhero that parallels lessons of faith.

In this story, Captain Sun battles to foil the plot of the enemy, Black-Out, who is blinding and darkening the entire city.

It's a nice combination of a comic book and a devotional put together in a format that is enticing not only for kids but I found myself reading the entire book in one sitting wanting to see how it ends.

It is an easy-to-read, holds your attention approximately 20-page, 8 chapter hand-held book with short devotionals in between each chapter set to look like newspaper print but include a scripture and a question related to superheroes that help the reader think about applying the story to the Bible teachings.

All of the books in the series include questions for kids interspersed between chapters and as a list of questions at the end of the book. They are kid-friendly, with family friendly content, and as a parent, I can say, they are written in a parent-friendly format which could be read independently by a child or read aloud by an adult to a child.
This book covers topics of the origin story of Captain Sun, rescue, power, and a team of heroes. There are currently two additional books in the series, which I did not receive as part of this review, but they deal with fear, Book 2, and the unseen world, Book 3.

How Did We Use It?

I was happy to receive a book that looked like it might pique the interest of my graphic novel/Manga reading daughter. Before I handed it entirely off to her, I sat down and read it myself. It's probably important for you to understand that I am not personally a big reader and while the pictures of comics usually intrigue me, I typically get lost in trying to figure out which frame of text and picture to read next. However, this book actually ended up holding my interest and was easy to follow. I ended up finishing the book as I even found myself on the edge of my seat a bit wanting to see how the story would conclude. All the time, I realized it was paralleling biblical accounts and lessons of faith. So, I had a pretty good idea where it was headed, though I was pleasantly a bit surprised with the ending. Now that I had read it in full, it was time to see what my daughter thought of the book.

I loved that the author signed my copy.

What Did We Think?

This book is a really enjoyable way to learn key elements of Scripture. Even my art critic of a daughter thought the illustrations were well done. I really enjoyed the way they presented a short devotion in between each chapter and thought to put it in the style of a newspaper headline. There were also questions at the end of the book in question format, which was thought-provoking. But, I really loved the consistent styling of presenting the Scripture in comic book superhero newspaper format.
