The Power of Introverts
And, finally - Part 3 of Introvert articles. This time, I talk about the power behind introversion - That quiet strength.
Power of introverts
Please stop telling an introvert to speak up and exert themselves. Introverts want you to understand that they are not a hallow shell or weak simply because they don’t spew out every word that comes to their mind the instant it resides there or thrust themselves upon others socially. It’s time that the world steps back and takes notice that there is a real power of introverts.
In a culture that applauds extroverts as being the only acceptable approach to life, often the most powerful attributes of an introvert is misunderstood or under appreciated when, in reality, if introverts are allowed to use their natural personality leanings, there is quite a bit of power in their silence. After all, even a fool appears wise when he holds his tongue.
Calmness
Remaining calm is the first thing we are told to do in times of danger or crisis, and introverts are good at this. Introverts not only prefer but often provide a sense of calm. While most would rather reboot at home and usually become overwhelmed in loud, noisy environments, isn’t a bit of peace and solace a huge asset to offer an otherwise chaotic world?
Quality over Quantity
Introverts thrive on the world inside their heads and often over analyze and overthink everything, which gives them energy to make sound decisions and to connect on a deeper level with a chosen few. While extroverts are busy collecting acquaintances they call friends, most introverts will be drawn to quality over quantity.
Depth
The craving to go deeper until we strike gold in a life-changing idea is what gives introverts depth. This depth is really an asset and source of power, though often disregarded as such. While our culture applauds extroversion and assertiveness, introverts are more often than not misunderstood as being rude when we zone out or abruptly end a conversation that is draining us with its meaninglessness or shallow talk. Who needs shallow, meaningless talk when we can really connect with those around us with thought-provoking conversation? Introverts crave this depth which is why we enjoy the inward world of our thoughts. What introverts are really wanting is not necessarily to withdraw. We withdraw because the shallowness exhausts us. What we really long for is to make a deeper connection one on one and make a difference in someone’s life.
Empathy
Because introverts also often tend to be highly sensitive people, it is introverts who have the capacity of bringing empathy to a crisis situation.
Introvert Career Strengths
In the work world, introverts are amazing at working alone and are driven by ideas. This is great news for the backbone of so many businesses and careers. An introvert is able to be quite successful at work that involves being alone with their thoughts. Some of these careers that introverts thrive in include:
Computer Programming – Because introverts have the capacity to think logically and often prefer working with machines over working with people, computer programming is a wonderful fit.
Inventors – Many introverts are able to take their daydreaming thoughts to the next level to formulate tangible items that help serve the needs of others through inventions.
Engineers – The need to think through problems analytically without distraction is a plus to be used in engineering.
Mechanics – A lot of introverts not only think a lot but also enjoy putting these thoughts to use with hands-on activity that is necessary for mechanics. Introverts also enjoy being part of a supportive team that keeps the car or plane or other objects operating well so it can be used properly for its intended purpose.
Analysts – The deep-thinking analytical thoughts of an introvert is an ideal fit for analysts.
Writers – Introverts are often told to stop daydreaming and easily get lost in their thoughts. This is a perfect trait for a writer who is able to put these words to print.
Artists – Expressing yourself through the arts is a great outlet for introverts.
Counselors – While working directly with people may not appeal to some, the hyper sensitive nature of most introverts, makes counseling or therapy ideal for many who are then able to share their empathy to help others.
Take a moment to look inside and experience the quiet strength that comes from within introverts. This inward thinking is often difficult for extroverts to understand, and is far too many times disregarded as weakness, which is really a tragedy. Because, when these traits are respected enough that an introvert feels comfortable sharing their innermost thoughts and ideas, this is when the world will benefit richly from the power of introverts.
