Here's what I've been reading lately in the early mornings when the sun streams in over the pages. 

This is Love Never Fails - Day 14

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.


LOVE NEVER FAILS!

Keep on loving first, before you attempt any other solution to a problem. Keep on loving those who are unloveable. Kee pon loving, because - when it is truly love as described in this passage - it never fails!

This is Love Keeps Going - Day 13

LOVE ALWAYS PERSEVERES

This means it never gives up. It keeps going, believing the best. Like a marathon runner ready to hit the wall but endures, love always perseveres!

This is LoveAlways Hopes - Day 12

Today's celebration is Day 12, which is also the day I celebrate my Valentine Baby daughter, who turns 15 this year. We call her our Valentine baby, because that is the day we got to bring her home from the hospital and begin our lives together. She is growing into a beautiful Christian woman, and it's been fun to watch her blossom. Happy birthday, my dear! I know God has a lot planned for you.

Now, there is also another part of love to explore today from 1 Cor. 13.

LOVE ALWAYS HOPES

When hopes are dashed, love is crushed and broken. Love always hopes! There is always s knowing that your hope will not disaapoint you!

LOVE ALWAYS TRUSTS!

When trust is broken, this is not love. This isn't to say that it is beyond repair and cannot be forgiven. It depens on circumstances, of course. But, where there is love, there is trust. There is honesty and no fear.

Was Adam Alive To See Noah Born? A Math Lesson

Yesterday we started back homeschooling after a Hanukkah/Christmas/New Year break and began reading the Bible Chronologically from Genesis using a book called The Daily Bible In Chronological Order 365 Daily Readings. When we got to Genesis 5, the homeschool mom in me took over with excitement as I asked the kids to get their math notebooks and a pencil.

Our mission: To discover if Adam was alive when Noah (the one who built the ark) was born.

According to our calculations based on scripture, Noah is Adam's great great great great great great great (that's 7) grandson.

In Genesis 5:3, it begins to tell us about Adam's children, grandchildren, etc. It begins with Seth, Adam's youngest son. It gives us the age of Adam when Seth was born and continues from there. If you want a fun math experiment, open your Bible and begin. To get the full math lesson effect, you need to take Adam's age when Seth was born (130) and add to it the age of Seth when he had Enosh, etc. Get these numbers directly from Genesis 5.

To give you a Teacher's Edition answer and make it easy on you (provided we figured it right - It was, after all, the first day back after a long break), here's a summary:

Adam lived to be 930 years old:

Adam was 130 when Seth was born (son)
Adam was 235 when Enosh was born (grandson)
Adam was 325 when Kenan was born (great grandson)
Adam was 395 when Mahalelel was born (great great grandson)
Adam was 460 when Jared was born (great great great grandson)
Adam was 622 when Enoch was born (great great great great grandson who walked w/God)
Adam was 687 when Methusaleh was born (g-g-g-g-great grandson - Old as Methusaleh)
Adam was 874 when Lamech was born (g-g-g-g-g-great grandson)
Adam would have been 1,056 when Noah was born (g-g-g-g-g-g-great grandson)

Conclusion: No, Adam missed seeing Noah be born by 126 years. But, he lived to see Noah's daddy turn 56.

Homeschool Review Crew - Geology and Apologetics by Northwest Treasures Taking the Mystery Out of Geology

If you've ever wondered how geology relates to Christianity and creation or how to approach this part of science with a biblical perspective, you will understand why I was thrilled to get a chance to review Taking the Mystery Out of Geology as well as the 6-part class on Geology and Apologetics from Northwest Treasures. Other members of the crew had the opportunity to review one of their other resources:

Northwest Treasures also offers physical courses, field trips, a high school level Northwest Treasures Curriculum Project, and one for PreK-3rd grade called Geology for "Little Eyes".

What is Northwest Treasures?

I received access to two Vimeo videos. The first one was about 20 minutes long and called Taking the Mystery Out of Geology. It was a must-watch to understand the importance of geology and its role in world history and science from a Christian perspective. Patrick Nurre is the narrator on this video as he presents his philosophy. Taking the Mystery Out of Geology explains 13 terms that are useful in understanding geology in terms of a biblical worldview as well as how major events in history, like the Flood and the Ice Age coincide with teachings. This one is recommended for those in 5th Grade and up.

The second video lessons I received were a set of 6 videos in a course entitled Geology and Apologetics that also includes questions for discussion. Some of the answers are just for discussion, while others are found in the lesson's text.

These video lessons vary in length, but are mostly about 15 minutes each, with the shortest one being just under 11 minutes, and the longest just slightly over 21 minutes long. They are presented with the instructor speaking throughout along with illustrations displayed as he speaks. They each end with a few discussion questions and on a couple of the videos he asks you to pause the video to look up scripture or conduct a bit of research.

I was given access to Vimeo for six months so I could view the full course. The Geology and Apologetics course is one of their newer courses and is intended to take some of the conflicts that comes with most geology studies and approach them from a biblical perspective. It is recommended for Grades 8 through adults.

How Did We Use It?

I first sat down to watch the Taking the Mystery Out of Geology video to both get a grasp of where Northwest Treasures is coming from as far as their philosophy of connecting science with geology and to learn what they were presenting. I ended up watching all 6 of the 6-lesson set in one day. I had intended on soaking up the information mainly for my own knowledge, but I ended up watching with my daughter in the room hoping she was soaking some of the information up. Occasionally, I would capture her attention with something, such as the section on the birds (which she loves) and the fossils, which she also found intriguing.

What Did We Think?

These videos are packed with information. If you are like me, you will find yourself wanting to watch them more than once just to grasp the depth of all of the details. They are well presented and very informative. I am sure I will be referring back to them as it's not possible for my little brain to take everything in the first time through since there is so much knowledge here. I am blown away with how packed with Apologetics these videos are. I really love how he encouraged us as Christians to really dive in and learn about our genealogies and history so we can be prepared to stand up for what we believe in regards to worldview and science.

Homeschool Review - Planet 316

I was thrilled to get a chance to review the Planet 316 Story Bible and the companion Planet 316 Story Bible App from Planet 316 and WorthyKids/Ideals.

What is the Planet 316 Story Bible and the companion Planet 316 Story Bible App?

This review comes in two parts. First, there is the actual Planet 316 Story Bible that is really high quality, hardcover with thick, glossy pages and bright, colorful images. There are more than 100 stories in more than 300 pages of storytelling, illustrated text.


Some of the Bible stories included are:

55 stories from the Old Testament from Creation, Noah, Babel, Abraham, Jacob and Esau, Joseph, Moses, Gideon, Samson, Ruth, Hannah (my favorite), Samuel, Saul, David and Goliath, Wisdom of Solomon, Job, Elijah, Elisha, Jonah, Daniel, Queen Esther, to the Rebuilding of the Temple and Nehemiah.

49 New Testament stories starting with Zechariah and Elizabeth, Mary and Joseph, the Birth of a Savior, several stories of Jesus growing up and his ministry, Crucifixion, Resurrection, the Beginning of the Church, Philip and the Ethiopian, Paul, and the Return of Jesus.

Second, it comes with a free companion Planet 316 Story Bible app that can be downloaded from the iTunes or Google Play stores. The app is easy to use and scans each page to make the images look as though they have popped up off of the pages in 3D fashion along with accompanying sounds and/or voices that adds an interactive emphasis to the stories.

Below is a picture of how it looks when a child is using the app on an iPhone. It's a bit tricky to get an accurate picture of how it all looks on the app, but the 3D elements are really cool. I tried to get a video record of it as well, but I had downloaded the app on the phone I usually use to video, and her electronic tablet that I used to capture the picture of her using it wouldn't accommodate transferring the video to my iPhone to upload to my blog. So, all I can do is explain that there are sound clips on each picture as well as the 3D effect. Sometimes, it's a character you tap on saying something. Other times, it's the sound of a bird or another environmental sound like water. All of it adds to the interactive storytelling experience.

How Did We Use It?

We were already excited and impressed by the quality of the actual story Bible, and then we discovered it came with a free downloadable app as well. I easily found the app on the iTunes app store and downloaded it to my phone, which by the way is an older model phone and only has the capability of updating as far as iOS 9. Still, the app downloaded with no issues and worked perfectly!

When you find it on the iPhone app store, this is how it looks along with all of the description and system/device requirements to run the app.

It is so cool, too! All you have to do is hold the phone to scan the page, and the images pop up in 3D fashion, and there are sounds that accompany them. Sometimes, each character you tap on makes a different sound or says a different thing. Of course, our favorite was the elephant since my daughter has been an elephant loving child since she was two.

See how the crosses pop up off of the page? There is a voiceover on this one that is really powerful! It really brought home the message of Easter/Resurrection Sunday!

The app was super easy for my daughter to figure out without any additional instruction other than my telling her to tap on different parts of the picture to see if a new soundbyte would play depending on what part of the picture you tapped.

How's that for experiencing the burning bush? You hold the phone with the app installed on it over top of the page, and the burning bush looks like it pops out at you.

What Did We Think?

This is so cool! The Bible in and of itself is printed with really high quality with a hardback cover and thick, hard-to-tear pages filled with beautiful, colorful and sweet images and biblical accounts told in a short story form. But, making it pop out and come alive with sounds and 3D images through the app is really fun and interactive!
