Above all else, our homeschool is based on the principles of the Bible, and when I find reading materials that encourage growth in this area, I absolutely love it. So, I was excited to get a chance to review Imagine. . .The Great Flood by Matt Koceich from Barbour Publishing. Of course, it never hurts when the author adds page-turning Bible adventure through a story based on historic and biblical facts with a bit of imagination. With a time travel feel, the story is really more of a dream that parallels the main character's real life struggles and ultimately helps him realize that he can trust God and his parents.

What is the Barbour's Imagine... The Great Flood?

The author, Matt Koceich, is a public school teacher and missionary. The "Imagine" series is designed to help children understand major stories of the Bible by enveloping the young reader in action and adventure as if they are living in biblical times.

I received a 110-page paperback glossy cover book that is a perfect size to hold in your hands with text the perfect size for young readers, approximately ages 8 to 12. The story is told in 15 chapters of adventure.

MY SUMMARY OF THE STORY:

It's about having faith to move forward through all of your uncertainties and fears. It's about forgiveness and a fresh start.

The story includes 10-year-old Corey who is moving from Texas to Florida, and he doesn't want to leave the friends or place he has known all of his life. The boy falls and bumps his head, and suddenly finds himself in the time of Noah with animals entering the ark, he meets Shem and has a dangerous run-in with a giant and remembers his great grandfather who came to America on a boat not knowing what would lie ahead. The bulk of the book takes place with Corey in the time of the flood. The final chapter returns to modern day three months after he has moved to Florida. Interestingly, he has befriended a boy named Noah whom he helps to save from falling into the water. Corey realizes that while he didn't want to leave his friends behind in Texas, his new beginnings in Florida were not as frightening as he had worried they would be. All it took was a step of faith and obedience.

How Did We Use It?

I handed the book to my 10-year-old to read and she immediately sat absorbed in the story for the first part of a school day. I then asked her for a synopsis:

She told me -

The story is about:

The family was moving to Florida from Texas. It was storming in Texas, Corey who is 10 years old, while walking with his dog, he tripped and bumped his head and somehow ended up back in time to the flood in the time of Noah. Corey gets chased by giants. More adventure happens, and it ends with a birthday party.

She said that she could relate to Corey and his feelings and that she learned about forgiveness and how God can forgive you.

Since she expresses herself better through art than through words, I then asked her to paint me a picture summarizing the story or to choose her favorite part.

What Did We Think?

In the words of my daughter:

"I like how they left it up to the reader to see if it's a dream or not."

I really like how the book was full of adventure and that the text was easy to read. The story was the perfect length so as not to drag on but not to feel too short either.
