I was thrilled to get a chance to review Art in America, K-3 Vol. 8 from ARTistic Pursuits Inc. THE curriculum for creativity! as part of their K-3rd Grade Level, Volumes 1-8 lesson books, written by Brenda Ellis.

What is ARTistic Pursuits Inc. Art in America, Grades K-3, Volume 8?

This is art instruction in the form of a hard cover book, DVD and Blu-ray. All of the art materials you need are listed for you including suggestions and links of where to get the items at a discount. Mostly, these lessons used an ebony pencil, sharpener, and eraser.

I have had the privilege of reviewing ARTistic Pursuits Inc. three times prior with other books from their curriculum:

Sculpture Technique Model
Sculpture Technique CONSTRUCT

And, more recently:

Grades K-3, Volume 1 Art for Children Building a Visual Vocabulary

While I have loved each and every book so far, I really like the Grades K-3 series with the DVD/Blu-ray and nicely presented hardcover book curriculum.

This particular drawing book focuses on American artists from the 18th to the 20th centuries with a focus on Modern Art. This book contains 18 lessons, which serves as one semester worth of art lessons if used once or twice a week, 64 pages with 82 images and is intended to serve as a practical guide for children 8-10. It takes the student step-by-step through observing objects around them and implementing the art concepts into creating drawings. I love how it used everyday items like a child's favorite toy, food, people, flowers, etc.

How Did We Use It?

These lessons begin by simply inserting the DVD into a player and watching. Though, not all of the lessons are on the DVD. There are 18 projects throughout the book/DVD sessions, and six of them are included in DVD lesson format. The rest involve reading a small section about art in America or a specific American artist followed by instruction on an art project for the child to complete.

Each lesson includes at least one art activity which is intended to be used one time a week for younger students and two times a week for the older students. My daughter and I always find ourselves completely absorbed in art. Once we begin, it's hard to stop. So, we did not limit ourselves to two lessons a week.

I also love art, but I have never felt as though I am very good at it. So, I sat down alongside my daughter and enjoyed every last bit of the lessons. Some of the art I presented in this review are my daughter's and some are mine.

What Did We Think?

We may be a bit biased since my daughter eats, sleeps, and breathes art as if it is a special part of who she is, but we have found ARTistic Pursuits Inc. to be a solid curriculum that holds our interests. We absolutely love good art instruction, and I found this to be excellent in terms of both teaching art technique and interweaving elements of American history throughout.
