The start of February every year, there's a tradition that is more fun than scientific. It is the celebration of Ground Hogs Day. The idea is that when a ground hog comes out of his hole it is said that we will have 6 more weeks of winter or enjoy an early spring depending on whether or not this ground hog sees his shadow.
There are events that go all out with town celebrations and even a movie named after the day.
For homeschoolers, you can find a lot of fun activities online to enjoy the day while learning a little about weather, science, ground hogs/hedge hogs, etc. When I used to sell books for Barefoot Books, they had a nice book about hedge hogs that correlated well with the day, hence the picture above. Check out their site if you want to find a current vendor of these amazing books.
