What is YWAM Publishing Heroes of History - Benjamin Franklin?

YWAM stands for Youth With A Mission, and YWAM Publishing is an extension of this ministry. YWAM Publishing has the goal of encouraging Christians to make a difference in today's world. The Heroes of History series fits right into this mission by presenting historical figures who inspire us.

The authors, Janet and Geoff Benge, are husband and wife. She was an elementary teacher, and he holds a history degree.

YWAM Publishing's materials are extremely flexible. The books can be used as a read-alone or as a family read-aloud. The study guides make it easy to integrate additional subjects into your reading. It allows you to really get in-depth and enjoy a well-rounded unit study complete with English, geography, history, and more.

I received a 197-page paperback book and a 83-page download to the Curriculum Study Guide. The guide has two parts. The first part is 83 pages and contains the questions and suggestions and resources. Part 2 includes about 5 pages that include maps, a timeline, and a fact sheet. The study guide contains traditional discussion questions along with tons of additional resources and ideas to launch unit studies for days that encompass, history, science, language arts, and art.

We especially enjoyed of the quotes of Benjamin Franklin:

How Did We Use It?

I was asked to read the book or have my student read it, and use the study guide materials in some way. I really think that the books in and of themselves are well written an amazing. When you add the study guide, it creates a full, well-rounded picture of this time in history and really brings the lessons to life.

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to review YWAM Publishing's Billy Graham, Milton Hershey, and Thomas Edison biographies and study guides, so I already knew what to expect with this Benjamin Franklin review. I feel like the book is the perfect level for my 7th grade daughter, and it was even appealing to me, which says a lot since I'm not a lover of reading. It's presented in an interesting storylike manner that covers a lot of Benjamin Franklin's childhood and into adulthood discoveries and contributions to society that we still use today.

The study guide provided a lot of suggestions to expand the study of the book and really get more acquainted with Benjamin Franklin. I really enjoy all of the quotes which the study guide covered. We were especially surprised that one of my daughter's grammar lessons included a copy work quote from Benjamin Franklin, to which I promptly and excitedly pointed out was one of Benjamin Franklin's quotes. It also does include traditional discussion style questions about each chapter. Additionally, I appreciate all of the resources and books mentioned and really loved the suggestions for art. My daughter is very hands-on, art-oriented. So, the suggestion to create a fashion catalog from the time period, soapmaking and candlemaking as well as creating a charcoal sketch of Benjamin Franklin flying a kite was a welcome section.

What Did We Think?

This company has a special place in my heart. When I was new to homeschooling, I ran across a booth of YWAM at a homeschool convention. The people were incredibly informative and friendly, and it stood out to me. I have found their biographies to never disappoint and the study guide provides a good launching pad for some solid, in-depth discussion.
