Did You Know? Odd Language Tidbits

Did You Know?

During the Middle Ages, scribes attempted to copy down words the way they sounded. This is all well and good until you consider how many regional dialects there were which made for several inconsistencies. Add to this a famous Englishman who started a printing press but hired workers of different speaking languages who spelled words the way they saw fit. It was all printed regardless. Even the man responsible for the dictionary, Noah Webster, influenced the difference between British and American English word spellings and included unusual words like “Heuristic” which is used to describe something that’s taught or learned from experience; or, “boffola” which is a joke that’s met with extremely loud laughter.
