Field Trip in Pictures: My Homeschool Bus Visits The Butterfly House

Recently my kiddos and I took a field trip to the Butterfly House in Faust Park in Creve Coeur, Missouri.  I thought the best way to share this was through photos.

My only regret is that I left my close up lens at home, so I had to settle for pics off my iPhone.  All in all, you'll still get a good idea of what it's like to take a field trip to the Butterfly House.

I'll start with a short video.  We tried and tried the entire time we were there to capture these beautiful Blue Morpho butterflies, and we finally realized that the ugly brown butterflies we had been seeing, with this big circle that looks like a huge ugly eye, were actually the beautiful Blue Morpho ones that camoflauged themselves when resting.

The Butterfly House is kept at a warm greenhouse temperature.  The kids and I actually get quite hot when inside, but it's worth it.  There are also beautiful flowers throughout the short walk around the enclosed gardens.

I particularly loved this picture because the butterfly came to rest on a Calla Lilly, the same kind of flowers that made up my wedding bouquet many years ago.

You have to be fast to catch the butterflies.  You can see the wings flittering in these above photos.

There's also plenty of picture opps for the beautiful little human caterpillars who are starting to go into their chrysalis to transform into a beautiful butterfly.......  Sniff!

Throughout the Butterfly House, they had hanging platters of plantains which the butterflies loved to eat.

Outside, on the Butterfly House grounds, they have a playground and a climbing structure of a caterpillar.

  1. Beautiful pictures! I have long wanted to visit the Butterfly Conservatory in Niagara Falls. I'll add Faust Park to my list as well.
