Math shouldn't have to come complete with tears, but in our house it quite often has; so, I was excited to get a chance to review LearnBop for Families, with access for between 2-4 students, from LearnBop and see if this personalized online self-paced tutor learning site could wipe away some math anxiety with my children and make math stick.

What is the LearnBop?

LearnBop is a unique online site that personalizes the teaching/learning process for Third through 12th Graders by allowing you to first choose a learning road map for your child, identify knowledge gaps, learn and master concepts, build confidence, and receive real-time insight into how your child is doing.

I received an annual family membership to this online program. I could use the family membership with up to 4 children.

The way it works is that you log on through the parent's account, and then select the student individually. The student first answers a series of a few questions called a Warm-Up which is used to identify any learning gaps. Once the Warm-Up is complete, the student attempts to make his or her way through a road map that lists the new concepts needed to learn. Along the way, there are achievements to unlock by watching videos and completing problems to solve.

Once the student is logged on, the basic premise is to complete goals along a road map.

It starts with a teaching video. At the end of each video, there is a summary of what your child has learned.

When you get to the end of the segments of goals within the new concepts to learn section, the student is asked to complete a series of questions, called Solve Bops! There is usually a 90% mastery required to continue beyond the Solve Bops.

The student is also able to see his or her achievements, both Learning and Milestone achievements as well as their Learning Progress.

From the parent dashboard, you can see the road maps, achievements, and progress for each student.

How Did We Use It?

I set up all three of my children to use LearnBop. My youngest is set up at the 4th Grade level, my son at HS Algebra II and my almost high schooler daughter at Geometry. I first thought I could just set them loose but soon discovered that, while the high schoolers may be more hands-off for mom, my youngest struggled and needed me to sit with her to help her understand some of the concepts. She has difficulty with math in general, and has always been a very kinesthetic and hands-on learner, so she had trouble grasping the concepts by watching a video. I spotted her struggle early on and decided that if the program was going to work for her, I would need to use it as more of a launching pad to new math concepts rather than her core. So, I started with the factoring lessons and let her watch the videos and then brought out a bowl of M&Ms for hands-on counters that we used to follow along with the lesson and to answer each question step-by-step.

What Did We Think?

I like the idea of this personalized tutor-like learning program. I also like how they took the concept of achievements, such as is often found in a video game, and turned it into a learning process with a road map to follow so the student always knows that they are on track. I am completely elated that there are higher level math courses for my older two, because it's been awhile since I had Algebra II/Trig so any help from me is a stretch, but the LearnBop videos demonstrate exactly what they need. Video learning especially works well with my soon-to-be-a-junior-in-high-school son. Even though my youngest needed more one-on-one attention after viewing the teaching videos, I'm encouraged to use LearnBop with her because it identified her learning gaps, so I got a clearer picture of exactly what she needs to learn to move forward in her math skills. I also liked the little words of encouragement memes in the corner that would pop up.
