I was thrilled to get a chance to review three book titles from Kayla Jarmon that included:
A Boy and His Dog
Don't Forget Me
Dying is Part of This World
Who is Kayla Jarmon, and what's behind her digital book titles?
Kayla Jarman is an author who directs her material to Christian households. She started writing when her son was hesitant to start kindergarten, and she wanted to send him off with comfort and confidence, so she wrote him a poem. After receiving a lot of encouragement that she should be writing content of encouragement, she sat down and wrote her first book.
The books are currently available for Kindle, and she is working on creating a radio audio drama for them as well. It looks like at least one of them is also available in paperback format as well. The books I received were all in a digital flipbook, on-screen format. They included:
Don't Forget Me - This is an illustrated child's book. It is the first book in her Discussion Book Series and prompts great discussion from a Christian worldview. This sweet book takes you from a baby's conception to his birth with a conversation imagined between God, the creator of the baby, and the baby throughout the pages. It parallels the mom and dad the entire time as well showing what is going on inside and outside of the womb and finally ending with the parents praying and longing to teach this child and raise him in the wisdom that comes from God alone.
Dying is Part of this World - This book is more of a chapter book for early readers and is the second book in her Discussion Book Series. The book lets you sit in on a conversation that takes place between a mother and her child about death. The first chapter dives right into the topic of death, and approaches the discussion from a biblical perspective, with scriptures throughout and discussion questions at the end of each chapter. It tackles the fear of death and goes beyond offering comfort to help us conquer the fear of death through a biblical Worldview.
The questions for discussion are at the end of the chapters. I loved the ones at the end of Chapter Three that asked How are we born into our new home, heaven? This and the other questions take the topic of death and make it easier to accept as a natural part of life.
A Boy and His Dog - As the title suggests, this book is about the relationship and closeness of a boy and his dog and how dogs enrich our lives. The story was prompted by the idea of how boys never seem to outgrow their love for or need for a dog in their lives to share a special friendship. The book is color illustrated for a child to enjoy, and is about 44 pages in length with text that an early reader could tackle, or enjoy being read to.
How Did We Use It?
I accessed the books online through a special code I was given and immediately showed the A Boy and His Dog book to my daughter after downloading it to my iPhone. I then previewed the other two on my laptop to decide how the best way to share them with my child would be.
What Did We Think?
I really appreciate that Kayla Jarmon addresses some issues that are rarely addressed in children's books. I've always thought that teaching a child the word goodbye is the most important thing you can do, because in my life, I've realized that life is all about a series of goodbyes. This isn't as sad as it sounds if you approach it properly, and I feel as if Kayla Jarmon did a fantastic job tackling this subject and the subjects in the other books as well. I love the message in Don't Forget Me, and I think the illustrations and presentation is tastefully done. I really appreciate the idea of this perspective. I rarely see a child's book done from the perspective of a baby not yet born. I think this book in particular would make a great baby shower gift for new parents-to-be.
