I was thrilled to get a chance to review a 3 month subscription to the CLEP and DSST prep materials from Study.com.

What is Study.com?

Study.com is an online resource that can be used to study for the CLEP tests and DSST programs. If you're not familiar with CLEP or DSST, they are a way to earn college credit through testing out of entire courses. The CLEP exam is commonly used by colleges and universities and stands for College Level Examination Program. The DSST exam is usually associated with the military but is apparently not limited to those entering service. It stands for DANTES Subjects Standardized Tests. DANTES is the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support.

Study.com can be used as a supplemental review site or as a full study program. It requires absolutely no teacher/parent prep. The student logs on from either their computer or a mobile app on any device, making it completely portable, and from there it is self-paced.

Study.com also offers you a way to earn college credits through their site when you choose an ACE or NCCS courses.

The site is set up in a really nice user-friendly format. You either jump in reviewing what you need to or you take a placement test that usually seems to consist of approximately 30 questions. And, then you begin the course that has been designed using your placement test to present you with the areas of study you need most. You can complete the entire course by viewing the videos, taking a quiz and continuing in that manner. Or, you can drill using flashcards, take practice tests, read the course transcript, or print out a worksheet followed by answers provided.

The CLEP courses are about 15 to 20 hours of lesson time plus the flashcard drills and practice tests.

How Did We Use It?

I was excited to send my high school junior her log-in information since she has been prepping to take the ACT for the very first time and has been beyond petrified about the math section. I thought this site might be a good place for her to go to get the needed practice even though it's more geared toward CLEP and DSST, it does have a college math section. I then turned it over to my college-age child who has been taking a gap year with no idea what he's doing with his life. He is excited that he now has this resource to bring him up to par and possibly ahead of where he "should" be.

My younger daughter and I logged on together and went through a couple placement tests as I asked the questions, and she answered them. After the placement test, there was a course presented that consisted of watching short videos and taking quizzes as well as flashcard review.

What Did We Think?

This was amazing! It was an extremely comprehensive study tool for DSST and CLEP testing. I really like how it is self-paced, and how you have the option, in many places, of reading the entire video transcript or printing out worksheets. I also love how portable this is. It's available for use on the computer or any mobile device, so it's easy to take along and learn on the go while waiting at doctor appointments or whatever. But, I'm most excited about my son who is now using this site in an attempt to gain college credit. He had taken a gap year and has recently decided he will need a BS in Computer Science to pursue a programming career but was terrified about taking the basic courses at a college level. So, this site has been a God-send for us.
