I was thrilled to get a chance to review a year of Pathway to Liberty’s History Curriculum - Pathway to Liberty’s Universal History, Year 1 Level 3 & 4 from Pathway to Liberty Homeschool Curriculum. We focused on Level 3 for my 7th grader. Along with the teacher guide and student book, I also received The Chain of Liberty, Do men have a right to think for themselves? by Jayme MacCullough and the corresponding study guide which is part of the required reading books. Level 3 is recommended for students 7th-10th grade. Level 4 is recommended for students 11th-12th grade.

Other members of the Review Crew received the following, including some in digital form, so be sure to click on the link at the end of the review to read what they thought of what they reviewed:

  • Pathway to Liberty’s The Middle Ages
  • Pathway to Liberty’s US History
  • Pathway to Liberty’s World History

I had never heard the term "Universal History", so this was a new endeavor for us. Basically, what I discovered is that Universal History is the common history of mankind of all men, all times, around the world. This curriculum presents real people of history in real time referring to real live events within the context of world history with a biblical worldview. It presents biblical history within the context of world events and walks through the Bible chronologically as well as using other reference books and materials. The curriculum spotlights important people and focuses on their character within their culture.

The curriculum spans from Creation through Ancient Greece. There are 4 lessons each week adding up to cover 26 weeks. The lessons are easily adjusted to accommodate individual learning styles as well as one or more students. The student guide presents the lessons that research scriptures, reasons from a principle and makes personal applications. It incorporates Bible, history, geography writing, and vocabulary.

The Teacher's Guide presents the lessons in a weekly overview and notes and includes an answer guide. It allows you to use it with multiple levels of children and to be as flexible as you need to be in order to customize it as you see fit. For Level 3 and 4 you can decide how much you want to be involved as the parent/teacher or allow your child to do more independent work with a more parent/teacher hands-off approach.

What is Pathway to Liberty's Universal History?

I received Universal History Year 1 Level 3 & 4 spiral-bound student text and teacher guide along with The Chain of Liberty paperback book and study guide as well as an updated YouTube Video Guide and Principle Reasoning Chart. You will also need a separate 3-ring binder or folder to keep assignments as you go.

How Did We Use It?

I was excited when I saw the package arrive as there were several books included, and we are in dire need of a good history curriculum for my 7th grader. So, I dug into the teacher's guide first to see what it was all about and how to use the program. I quickly noticed there were YouTube videos to watch that went along with the lessons, so I sat down and previewed the first 7 weeks worth of videos before presenting anything to my daughter.

Jayme MacCullough is the founder of Pathway to Liberty. She is a speaker, speaking from a principled perspective, is well-versed in the timeless documents of liberty, has written Bible studies, and is the author of The Chain of Liberty, Do men have a right to think for themselves? which I also received along with the study guide.

While the Student book and Teacher's Guide are both thick and comprehensive, there are some additional core books required. If your homeschool is like ours, you're going to find that you already have some of them. Others are available at the library, or you may decide it's worth it to purchase them.

The Teacher Guide presents all four levels of teaching on one page, making it easy to teach multiple levels of children all in one sitting.

The Student book includes a weekly overview, notes, YouTube video links, word studies, writing assignments, vocabulary, map work, and study guides.

What Did We Think?

This is amazingly comprehensive and I absolutely love how it bases everything on Genesis and God's creation of time and history. This is so perfect for us since I base my entire homeschooling curriculum for all of my children on the foundation of biblical truths. So, to see our world history presented in this manner was a breath of fresh air. It is my goal of my homeschool to lay a solid foundation on which to launch my children into adulthood to hold onto and live out their faith.

The books that came with this package are really nice and packed with information. The teacher guide allows me to lie it flat on a table or desk with the spiral binding. It contains everything, including the student text and schedules as well as how to present each lesson. I was happy to see that the Chain of Liberty book and study guide were included.

Additionally, one of my favorite aspects of this curriculum is the word studies, like the one suggested on doing a word study of Light. I cannot tell you how much I love word studies, and so was thrilled to see this was part of the curriculum.

This curriculum is by far the most detailed history lessons I have ever seen, and the fact that they use the Bible as the foundation of every lesson is wonderful!
