What is the 200 Essential Math Skills for Second Grade Workbook?

This is a physical workbook that I received that corresponds with the Mathseeds, from Reading Eggs, online program.

Since this is a brand new workbook from Reading Eggs, I first received a PDF version of the book until the initial printing was complete. We are talking - Fresh off the Press!!!

~

I then received the full workbook.

~

To correspond with the book, I also received a 3-month access to their online program, Reading Eggs Suite, for one student.

--

The workbook is designed for the student to complete short daily lessons that correspond with the online lessons from Reading Eggs' Mathseeds which follows a map style guide filled with interactive lessons and learning games. The workbook correlates Map sections 21-30 with the online program. Since it begins here, the lessons that correspond with the map sections begin at Lesson 101 and end with Lesson 150. While the workbook and the online program work hand-in-hand, you could do one or the other independently. The two together just reinforce each other nicely providing full instruction, online interaction as well as an opportunity to complete workbook style lessons.

~~

Start at the very beginning of the book where you will find an explanation of how to use the book and a content page showing all of the lessons along with their page numbers. There is also an easy-to-follow yearly planner overview.

I received the Second Grade level which covers 50 step-by-step, easy-to-follow lessons that take only 15 minutes a day and help your child learn 200 skills including:

Addition
Counting to 1,000
Fractions
Geometry
Measurement
Numbers
Operations
Patterns
Subtraction
Time
Word Problems

The workbook is 260 pages with 50 lessons, each of which includes four worksheets to complete. The book presents 10 quizzes and lesson reviews as well as award certificate pages upon completion of each section.

How Did We Use It?

I first presented the workbook to my daughter who was happy to try it out. We also went online to discover the corresponding lessons. She mostly worked it all independently and was happy with all of the hands-on activities in the book that included typical workbook style pencil to paper questions but also coloring and even cutting and gluing.

The lessons correspond with the Reading Eggs online program called Mathseeds. I was able to go into the parent portion of the program and change the number of her starting lesson, and then we were good to go.

The lessons are set up to follow a map. This 2nd Grade book starts with Map 21 and ends at the conclusion of Map 30:

Each lesson segment also contains one book that pertains to the skill being learned. You can have the book read to you or choose to turn that off. We opted to leave it on and have the story read aloud. I really liked how they incorporated reading along with the math.

At the end of each section of the map on the Mathseeds program, there is a new item that is "hatched". The workbook has a section at the end of each lesson group where you fill in the mystery of what was hatched. You would only know the answer if you have completed the online portion.

This ending section also allows you to check off the skills learned up to that point. And, at the end of each Map section, you fill in a certificate that offers a nice sense of accomplishment before moving on.

What Did We Think?

This workbook, in the words of my daughter, was a refreshing change from her most recent math curriculum. My youngest daughter absolutely loves workbook style learning, especially when it provides for hands-on crafts interspersed, so this was a true winner for her. I think it enriches the online program nicely to provide for a well-rounded learning experience. We are really pleased with the new workbooks.

Homeschool Review Crew - Great Waters Press No Longer Little: Parenting Tweens with Grace and Hope

Review, #hsreviews, #raisingrealmen, #halandmelanie, #boymom, #tweens, #homeschooling, tweens, preteens, Christian parenting, Christian sex ed, homeschooling

I absolutely adored being a mommy to my little bitties and actually went through a mourning process as I began to realize those days are behind me as I parent my oldest into adulthood and my youngest makes a shift through her tween years, so I was thrilled to get a chance to review No Longer Little: Parenting Tweens with Grace and Hope from Great Waters Press.

You probably are somewhat prepared for the physical changes taking place - But, no one prepared me... not even my child development/human services degree and background... for the emotional, mental, and spiritual changes that are taking place during these years between childhood into adolescence and adulthood. Well, that is - UNTIL THIS BOOK CAME ALONGSIDE ME AND WAS WRITTEN AS IF THEY HAD A TWO-WAY MIRROR INTO MY HOME! I absolutely needed this book right now!

No Longer Little by Hal and Melanie Young
I also received Love, Honor, and Virtue: Gaining or Regaining a Biblical Attitude Toward Sexuality, so please check out my review on that book as well.

What is No Longer Little: Parenting Tweens with Grace and Hope?

This is a brand new title and is for parents of children in those in-between years of 8 to 14 where these snuggly, adorable lap children are suddenly no longer little bitties, but they are also not yet teens or fully matured.

I received a hand-held autographed paperback, 204-page book with 12 chapters, an introduction, references, Scripture references, an index and a colophon (which if you don't know, like I didn't, is a way to give proper credit and description of the fonts used throughout the book, of which I devoured every word that I read and was literally living the descriptions in the book, with my youngest, as I sat to read it..

Authors Hal and Melanie Young are married and parents of six boys and two girls, at least some of whom are now adults. It is published under the Great Waters Press label, making Biblical Family Life Practical.

I'll be completely honest - I was hooked before I even got beyond the Introduction. The author completely described my son at age 10 or so, especially when describing math lessons taking all day, when he was previously a natural at math. It baffled me at the time. This book described this perfectly and made me realize in hindsight that this was all part of his transition into manhood - If only I had fully understood this at the time.

Fast forward to my youngest, who is 11, and we are once again facing transformational issues, namely emotional meltdowns and depression, and believe me - I needed this book, and I needed it now.

The font is easy on the eyes, so it's easy to read and packed with helpful information. The chapters are entitled:

Getting Bigger: Hormones and Body Changes
The Rollercoaster: Emotional Upheaval
Brains Turn To Mush: Why School Goes Awry
Many A Conflict, Many A Doubt: Spiritual Questions
The Awakening: Sexuality and Virtue
Social Struggles: Overcoming Awkwardness
Media, Gaming, and Discernment: More Than Amusement
Conflict At Home: Family Relationships
Transitioning: Youth in the Bible
Celebrating Growth: Coming of Age Ceremonies
Producers, Not Consumers: Work and Stewardship
The Next Big Thing: High School and Beyond

How Did I Use It?

I sat down to read it while we were away. I actually took it with me on our family vacation/working musical tour/Lifest to see For King and Country/Anniversary trip and snuck away to a quiet place early in the morning before my children were awake to read. I figured I would enjoy it whenever I captured some alone time on the beach, but I settled for early morning coffee and quiet time in the business center instead.

What Did I Think?

This book hits the nail on the head and explains in a personable, friendly manner, what is going on with kids between little kid childhood and adolescence. It brought back memories of things I read while studying child development, and the author even mentioned one of my favorite behaviorists, Jean Piaget. I especially loved how the book is presented in light of Scriptures and how the author holds nothing back but delivers it in a way that is not offensive and somehow made me feel as if we were laughing, crying, and smiling knowingly together throughout the entire book. I only wish I had this book a few years ago when my oldest went through this transformation, then he and all of his siblings could have benefited from my knowledge of what I learned from reading this book. I am grateful that my youngest who is currently in those transitional stage years will get the benefit of what I took away from this pleasant read.
