Review, #hsreviews, #memoriapress, #teachclassical, #classicaleducation, #literaturegudes, #classicalliterature, #classicalchristianeducation, #classicallyhomeschooling, memoria press, classical education, classical christian education, latin, classical literature, literature guides, classically homeschooling, classical homeschool, classical homeschool curriculum, classical christian curriculum,

I was thrilled to get a chance to review Eighth Grade Literature Guide Set  from Memoria Press for the following novels:

Wind in the Willows Literature Guide Set
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer Literature Guide Set
As You Like It Literature Guide Set
Treasure Island Literature Guide Set

Be sure to check out what the other reviewers thought of the following products that they received:

StoryTime Treasures Student Guide and Answer Key
More StoryTime Treasures Student Guide and Answer Key
Second Grade Literature Guide Set
Third Grade Literature Guide Set
Fourth Grade Literature Guide Set
Fifth Grade Literature Guide Set
Sixth Grade Literature Guide Set
Seventh Grade Literature Guide Set
Ninth Grade Literature Guide Set
Tenth Grade Literature Guide Set

What is the Eighth Grade Literature Guide Set

The Eighth Grade set includes 4 guide sets for 4 different novels, which I was asked to provide. Though, there is a set on Memoria Press that also includes these for your convenience if you prefer. Each novel guide set includes a teacher manual and a student guide.

The guides focus on vocabulary, spelling, comprehension, and composition skills. Each one is set up similarly with:

Reading Notes
Vocabulary
Comprehension questions
Discussion Questions/Activities
Quotations

The Teacher Guides each have quizzes and tests along with answer keys. Each book set's length depends upon how long the corresponding novel is to cover. Each novel is expected to take about 6-7 weeks.

The Wind in the Willows student guide is 53 pages of workbook-style pages that covers the 12 chapters of the book

As You Like It is a 42-page student guide covering five acts of Shakespeare

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is 79 pages of student guide and a thick teacher guide, covering 36 chapters

Treasure Island has an 89-page student guide that covers 34 chapters and an appendix with nautical terms

We received the entire set that included the teacher guides and student guides but no novels. I was to provide these, which was not a problem.

How Did We Use It?

I figured it made the most sense to start with the Treasure Island set since we already had the book and because I am familiar with the story. My daughter is going into 8th grade, so this is perfect for her level. During the course of the review, we focused on Treasure Island, and I also looked over the other three sets to discover they are all presented in a similar fashion.

What Did We Think?

This is a great way to really delve into reading for fun and for comprehension. I liked the selections of novels that correspond with the set, too. They seemed to be the grade level and family-friendly appropriate for the age of my reader.

What is Classical Composition II: Narrative Set?

Memoria Press
Classical Composition II: Narrative Set
First, it's important to point out that Memoria Press is based on the Trivium model of learning which takes three basic stages:

Grammar
Logic
Rhetoric

This narrative set is directed toward more of the logic, dialectic, stage which, very oversimplified summed up, is based on a model of Plato and is the stage where logic and analyzing begins to form through asking questions, though it seems to me there is a bit of the Grammar stage still involved as well as introducing some of the rhetoric stage, so in my opinion,  it is a nice course to bridge the three stages together. This Classical Composition II: Narrative Set picks up where the Classical Composition I: Fable Set leaves off, and this is the natural progression to follow.

The idea behind this program is to create ideas for composition, teaching skills one at a time to build upon the other. The goal throughout is to accomplish mastery instead of guessing what the right answer is, teaching through a modeling style as well as repetition with the hope that writing skills will become second nature to the student. It emphasizes that the student is writing to an audience and not just learning useless informational knowledge.

We received a nice packet that contained a DVD filled with the instructional videos, along with two spiral-bound books - a teacher guide and a student book. The set is recommended for Grades 5-12 and is the second part of the Classical Composition two-part set, with the first one being Classical Composition I: Fable Set, with the Fable Set ideally beginning in 4th Grade, and this Narrative one following in 5th Grade. Though, the Fable and Narrative sets together are a great starting point regardless of what grade your student begins.

Progymnasmata is the big long word that is behind this approach of teaching writing that was used by great ancient communicators, Cicero and Quintilian, and it is the foundation that Jim Selby uses to teach the art of communicating in this course. This is usually associated more with the rhetoric stage, but the instructor on the DVDs presents this "progymnasmata" approach in short lessons followed by student book hands-on work.

While the Classical Composition I: Fable Set laid the groundwork for writing in a style that engages the reader, this Classical Composition II: Narrative Set helps the student to learn how to communicate the same idea using different words, sentence structures, and perspectives.

The book contains 20 lessons presented in a fashion that builds from the most basic to the more complex, using well-chosen words, structuring the sentences, and presenting perspectives that build invention skills of originating narratives while engaging the imagination of the reader by creating recognition using well-worded descriptions.

The Teacher Guide also includes grading rubrics and a couple more goodies.

I really loved how when I opened up the Teacher Guide, I saw an entire explanation about the importance of keeping God in learning:

With the instruction DVD, I really didn't find a lot of need for intense lesson planning, but the Teacher Guide is set up in a way that practically does it all for you. All you have to do is follow it step by step, though the DVD is very helpful.

How Did We Use It?

My soon-to-be 7th grader and I sat down to explore this curriculum. It comes with a Teacher's Guide, but honestly, with the instructional DVDs and the student book, at this stage, I found that it required very little teacher prep on my part. Still, the Teacher Guide is nice to have to follow along and make sure your student is on track. It also has grading rubrics which make a nice guide.

What Did We Think?

I'm always excited when I get a chance to review anything from Memoria Press, and this set is no exception. As I have come to expect from the company, this curriculum is solid and presents information in a way that propels students into diving deep into learning.

Homeschool Review Crew - Memoria Press First Form Latin

Review, #hsreviews, #memoriapress, #classicalchristianeducation, #classicalyhomeschooling, #classicalchristianhomeschooling, #memoriapresslatin, classical christian education, classical christian curriculum, classical christian homeschool curriculum, memoria press, product names, classical education, what is classical education

I was thrilled to get a chance to review First Form Latin from Memoria Press.

What is the First Form Latin from Memoria Press?

Memoria Press, review, #hsreviews, #memoriapress, #classicalchristianeducation, #classicalyhomeschooling, #classicalchristianhomeschooling, #memoriapresslatin, classical christian education, classical christian curriculum, classical christian homeschool curriculum, memoria press, product names, classical education, what is classical education

I received a complete set consisting of 8 items - a lesson 3-DVD-set, flash cards, a student book text, student workbook, pronunciation CD, quizzes & test booklet, teacher key and teacher manual. The workbooks are intended to be used by one student in the 4th Grade through 9th Grade but is great for anyone 6th Grade and above who is a beginner at Latin, or if you have just completed Latina Christiana it would be the next step. To get the full benefit of the study, it should be used at least three times a week.

First Form Latin is written by Cheryl Lowe, who is also the author of other Memoria Press Latin programs. What makes First Form Latin unique is that it is set up to be part of the trivium model of teaching that presents Grammar in a systematic way to help the student retain and understand, and it includes workbooks where the student is able to practice the learned skills and easily be able to recognize inflected forms.

When a student completes First Form Latin, they will know:
  • 185 vocabulary words
  • 5 noun declensions
  • first and second declension adjectives
  • 6 indicative active tenses of the first two verb conjugations

The First Form Latin focuses on vocabulary and grammar forms written for beginner Latin students regardless of their age, even though it is recommended for Grades 4-9. It is also recommended as a great follow-up course to Latina Christiana.

If you are not familiar with the Trivium idea, it is based on three stages of learning:

  1. Grammar
  2. Dialectic
  3. Rhetoric

Cheryl Lowe is the author, whom if you are familiar with Latina Christiana, you will recognize the name. The teaching approach stresses grammar forms and vocabulary which are appropriate for the Grammar Stage of student. The Grammar stage is for anyone who is a beginner regardless of their grade level or age. However, First Form Latin is intended to be used with beginning Latin students Grade 4 or older or can be used directly following Latina Christiana regardless of the age of the student.

The First Form Latin set contains:

Lesson DVDs - Included are 3 discs that contain about 9 hours of teaching by former Highlands Latin School teacher, Glen Moore. Each lesson lasts about 15 to 20 minutes. As Instructor Moore is teaching, notes show up on the screen as well as illustrations, diagrams, and recitations.

A student text which is smaller than the other books at 9X7.5 inches. This makes it easier to hold and less intimidating. It contains 34 two-page lessons that open up on the fold/binding of the book so it's all right there easy to focus on at a glance. The final pages in the text contain oral drills.

Student Workbook allows the student to work through exercises and practice what they have learned until they master it. There are about 4 to 6 pages of workbook sheets for each lesson. Some have a little more material than others and correspond with the lessons. The end of the book contains vocabulary oral drill sheets.

Quizzes & Tests Booklet includes weekly quizzes and unit tests as well as a final exam that you can use as a learning gauge to see what is being learned before moving on.

Teacher Key (for Workbook, Quizzes, & Tests) includes answers to all of the workbook exercises as well as answers to the quizzes and tests.

Teacher Manual that contains the entire student text shrunk down to fit on the pages within the teacher manual. All of the answers are in color and includes a scripted lesson, a schedule for recitation, tons of notes, and an informational section. The Teacher Manual corresponds with the Student Workbook which contains about 4 to 6 pages of exercises for each lesson. It includes color-coded answers, a recitation schedule, and all of the notes needed to lead the student in instruction. It also has an FYI section.

A Pronunciation CD which provides you the ability to hear the proper pronunciations.

Flashcards include vocabulary, grammar forms and Latin sayings. There is a large stack included. The flashcards may seem like an extra component, but it is more like the backbone of the entire course. The vocabulary words and information found on the flashcards build on successful mastery of the program.

How Did We Use It?

My High School daughter has used Latina Christiana from Memoria Press, and all of my children have been exposed to Prima Latina at a young age, so she was familiar with the format and presentation. Even if I had chosen to use it with my younger daughter, at this level, the program actually requires very little teacher interaction, with the exception of using the answer key and manual for grading and to be within ear's reach should they need help, unless you choose to be a bigger part of the studies, and the instructional DVDs make it almost entirely hands-off for the parent unless they want to delve in deeper and take more control.

What Did We Think?

Back several years ago when I cried out to God for help with my son's education, the answer came to me in the form of Classical Education and the Trivium. Because of that, Memoria Press will always have a special place in my heart and always continues to impress me. Free Form Latin is no exception to that rule. The program is solid and the complete set is so impressive and packed with everything you need to be successful at mastering Latin Grammar and vocabulary before moving on to higher level Latin learning if you choose to do so. As always, Memoria Press never fails to impress me. I discovered the company when I was at a fork in the road with my oldest son's education. They were a life saver for me then and still are.
