10 Winter Driving Items You Need To Have With You

Driving during winter weather holds an entirely different set of dangerous scenarios than driving during summer or cooler weather.  When driving during cold weather, ice or snow, there is a danger of becoming stuck or stranded.  At very least, the cold temperatures put added stress on vehicles' engines, batteries, tires and exposed parts.  There is also high potential of being caught in traffic jams from inclement weather conditions.  When this happens, you'll want to make sure you're prepared by continuously keeping certain items in your car throughout winter months.

Sound of Music Homeschooling

On Tuesday, December 28, 2010, Agathe Von Trapp passed away at the age of 97. She was portrayed as Leisl on the movie, 'The Sound of Music.' Her real name was Agathe.

When watching the Sound of Music, it struck me with how carefree Maria was with sharing her love with the children. Her education was very Montessori and hands-on, carefree as she assigned each one with a note and taught them how to sing by having each one pop up when their note was spoken. Then, she went down the line - Do Re Me Fa So La Ti Do! Eventually, they were singing beautifully. During that same day out, they tipped over in a boat, hung from trees and ran through the fields beneath gorgeous mountains. This, I thought as I watched it, is how I want to homeschool.

I want my children to know discipline, but I want them to know most of all that they are loved and they have a purpose in this life. I want them to have a love for learning. I want them to discover all they can discover and run through mountains singing that the hills are alive with the sound of music - Whether figuratively or literally! I want them to learn while they embrace life.

Day 26 Advent Jesse Tree - Christmas Day!

Today is Day 25 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 25 is that of a baby in a manger or a nativity scene.

The scriptures are Luke 2:1-10 which is the account of Jesus' birth and John 3:16-17 - "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him."

There is no Old Testament reading for today as all the Old Testament prophecies we have read in the previous devotions come to fulfillment on today's study of Christ's birth. Today is the day we celebrate Jesus' birthday. But, it's more than that. The reason we celebrate his birth is because he came to die, to be the sacrifice for our sins, something we could not attain without Him. He was willing to leave His heavenly throne and His Glory to become a little baby in flesh, a human for us. When he was born, they laid him in a manger. What is a manger? It's a feeding trough for animals. They put him there because no one else had made room for Him. But, His words would appropriately become our Bread of Life.

We celebrate Jesus' birth. But, we don't celebrate a King that lies helplessly in a manger in flesh & blood, cold with no where else for him to lay. We celebrate his birth because of his life. He is God and he is man yet he did not sin........ever! He lived to be 33 years old & then died a cruel, horrificly painful death on the cross. But, he refused to complain or even take the pain killer offered him. And, we don't celebrate the baby or the cross because He stayed in the manger or because He stayed on the cross. We celebrate them because He did not stay in either place. Three days after being killed on the cross, he rose up from the grave in a spiritual body, walked among his believers for a brief more moments and then was taken up into heaven where he now remains. Because of this sacrifice of coming as a baby, dying as a man and being completely obedient to his Father, God; we now can come before the Father & be called his sons and daughters. Sin no longer stands in the way. And Jesus calls us his brothers, sisters and friends.

Activity: Celebrate Christmas with your family today!

Today's ornament for the Jesse Tree is the symbol of a baby in a manger or a nativity scene. Nativity scene ornaments are fairly easy to find to purchase. Or, you can make one simply out of popsicle sticks. You could also use rafia.

Day 24 Advent Jesse Tree

Today is Day 24 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 24 is that of an angel.

The scriptures are Psalm 91:11 - "He will put his angels in charge of you to protect you in all your ways;" and

Hebrews 1:14 - "Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?" Luke 2:8-14 and Romans 6:23 - "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

The Old Testament and New Testament verses explain more about angels. An angel is a messenger sent from God, usually with good news. The angel in this account had the message, "Peace on Earth." This was God's Christmas greeting to us sung to us by angels.

Activity: If you are so lucky as to have a white Christmas, go out and make a snow angel by laying down in the snow and waving your arms and legs. If not, you can join the angels in songs of praise to God for sending Jesus.

Today's ornament for the Jesse Tree is the symbol of an angel. There are so many options of how to make an angel ornament. One of my favorites is to take a crocheted doily & add a wooden bead or a doll face for the head. But, there are so many variations in making an angel ornament. Use your favorite.

Day 23 Advent Jesse Tree

Today is Day 23 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 23 is that of a candle or light.

The scriptures are Isaiah 42:6 - "I, the LORD, have called you to do what is right. I will take hold of your hand. I will protect you. I will appoint you as my promise to the people, as my light to the nations," and Isaiah 60:1-3 - “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn;" and

Luke 1:26-38, 2:32 and John 8:12 - "Jesus spoke to the Pharisees again. He said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will have a life filled with light and will never live in the dark."

The Old Testament and New Testament tie the prophecy together to show that it has been fulfilled in Jesus. It tells of a world that had become dark because of sin, but now there is hope. When we open our hearts to believe in Christ, a "light" shines on us. Our eyes are opened to understand the scriptures, and we begin to go about doing good and loving kindnesses for others. We then spread a light of hope to those who are stumbling around in the "darkness" and hurting.

Activity: Turn off the light in your room, then as you proclaim: "Jesus is the Light of the World," turn the light on suddenly and watch how light floods the darkness. The same activity can be done with a candle to illustrate how Christ's light truly shines and overtakes the darkness. Sing "This Little Light of Mine." Or even make some sand candles.

Today's ornament for the Jesse Tree is the symbol of a candle or a light. You could recycle some old light bulbs (make sure they're not the new green, energy-efficient ones since there is a hazard if those break). You can simply string some candles (the kind that have wick still attached and dangle on each side of the Christmas tree branch, or you can find an old fashioned candle holder (just don't truly light these as they are a fire hazard). Use them for your ornament only. Or, make your own lighthouse ornament. Be creative.

Day 22 Advent Jesse Tree

Today is Day 22 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 22 is that of a star.

The scriptures are Numbers 24:17 - "I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel. He will crush the foreheads of Moab, the skulls of all the sons of Sheth;" and

Matthew 2:1-12, Revelation 22:16 - "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star;" and II Peter 1:19 - "And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts."

The Old Testament and New Testament tie the story together by talking about the star that is to come and then referring to Jesus as the bright Morning Star which rises in our hearts. The Epiphany Star is a five-pointed star which symbolizes the body of Jesus Christ. The Book The Advent Jesse Tree reads:

The five points represent His hands and feet that were nailed to the Cross and His head with the crown of thorns. The Christmas story means nothing unless we, as were the wise men, are willing to search for Him. Once we find Him, we must come into Him and worship Him. As He gave the greatest gift of all to us, the gift of eternal life, we must be willing to give our lives to live for Him.

Activity: Sing Twinkle twinkle little star replacing the words "how I wonder what you are" with "my God placed you in the sky" or "you're my bright and Morning Star." Enchanted Learning website has several activities and crafts to enjoy related to stars. NASA has lesson plans explaining the sun as a star which correlates with the Scriptures that talk about Jesus being our bright and Morning Star.

Today's ornament for the Jesse Tree is the symbol of a star. You can make a star ornament in any number of ways. Crayola explains how to make a transluscent star ornament with pipe cleaners, glue & paint.

Day 21 Advent Jesse Tree

Today is Day 21 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 21 is that of a brick wall.

The scriptures are Nehemiah 1:3, 2:18, 6:15, Malachi 3:1; (for all the events of the building of the wall read all of Ezra and Nehemiah)and

Revelation 22:20 - "He who gives witness to these things says, Truly, I come quickly. Even so come, Lord Jesus."

The Old Testament and New Testament tie the story together by explaining the significance of the "wall." It represents the Wall of Jerusalem. At one time, there was a wall that encompassed the entire city of Jerusalem. Because God's people would not obey, God allowed bad armies to tear down the Wall of Jerusalem, and all the people were taken as slaves into different places and lands. But, God promised Judah to bring them back to their land. After they returned, the second Temple was completed under Zerubbabel. True worship was restored in Jerusalem in the yaer 486 B.C. Under Nehemiah's leadership, the Wall of Jerusalem was completed in 435 B.C. Following this prophesy in Malachi, there was silence from the prophets for 400 years waiting for the New Covenant which was fulfilled. You can read more in Matthew 11:10; Mark 1:2 and Luke 1:76 and Luke 7:27.

Activity: Build a wall out of cardboard bricks (If you don't own any, they can be purchased

relatively inexpensively, or build with something light-weight) - Then knock it down and rebuild it.

Today's ornament for the Jesse Tree is the symbol of a brick wall. This can be made using rectangular Lego bricks stacked up to form a wall. Or, you can use small flat pebbles and glue them together to look more authentic, like the Wall of Jerusalem.

Day 20 Advent Jesse Tree

Today is Day 20 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 20 is that of a fiery furnace.

The scriptures are Daniel 3:19-29, Jeremiah 1:8, II Kings 17:1-23; 25:1-17, Isaiah 43:2 and Jeremiah 1:8 The passages describe the faith of men such as Shadrach, Meshach and Abendnego who were willing to stand up for what they believed in even though the king had ordered them to bow before an idol. They refused.

The Old Testament passages explains how we should respond when presented with the choice of going along with the crowd and what is commanded of us when it goes against our beliefs. Just say no! Like Shadrach, Meshach and Abendnego who were thrown into a fiery furnace for not bowing to an idol. But, inside the furnace was an "Angel of God" who is believed to be Jesus himself. The men came out of the furnace not even smelling of smoke. Because of their stand, the king began to praise God. The three knew their God would deliver them from the fire.

Activity: Watch Veggie Tales Rach, Shack & Benny. Toast some marshmallows (it's a yummy visual as to what fire does to something - What the king intended to happen to the 3 men).

Today's ornament for the Jesse Tree is the symbol of a fiery furnace. A red and orange flame cut out of felt works well as does a fireplace ornament.

Day 19 Advent Jesse Tree

Today is Day 19 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 19 is that of a Bethlehem town silhouette with star.

The scriptures are Micah 5:2-4 - “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.” Therefore Israel will be abandoned until the time when she who is in labor gives birth and the rest of his brothers return to join the Israelites. He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they will live securely, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth. And he will be their peace; and

Luke 2:1-7 - "In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn."

The Old Testament readings relates to the New Testament in that both tell the account of the birth of Christ and show the significance of the town of Bethlehem. Bethlehem was a small city of little significance out of where would come the greatest of all Kings - The King of King - Jesus!

Activity: Sing "Oh Little Town of Bethlehem!" Play a game that shows how something large and meaningful can come from something little, such as a butterfly from a caterpillar. Use some math skills by re-enacting the census and count and record family members, stuffed animals and dolls.

Today's ornament for the Jesse Tree is the symbol of a Bethlehem town silhouette with a star. You might be able to find a Christmas card with this picture on it. Cut it out and glue it to a nice backing.

Day 18 Advent Jesse Tree

Today is Day 18 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 18 is that of a heart with writing on it.

The scriptures are Jeremiah 31:31-34 - “The time is coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord. “This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people; and

Hebrews 8-10 which explains the history of how this law came to be written upon our hearts; and

Acts 16:31 - They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household."

The Old Testament and New Testament tie the story together by explaining how God promised a new covenant that would be fulfilled in christ and a time when His Law would be written upon the people's hearts. The 10 Commandments (Law) was given & broken. Now, God has laid out a new "law." This law is written upon each of our hearts. Some may refer to it as our conscience. But, it goes deeper than that. It is a drive, a desire and a knowing of how to serve God even if we don't have his Law in front of us on paper. We have it written upon our hearts to know good from evil and to give us the compassion and desire to serve Christ with everything we do, think and say. The physical Law or tablet of stone could be broken or taken away or banned. But, this New Covenant "Law" is written upon our hearts. No one can snatch it away from us. Though, we can reject it. The way to receive this promise personally is to believe with all your heart. But, we also need to keep it fresh in our minds. Then, think upon God's Word, put it into your heart and build upon it. In Deuteronomy it tells us to speak about these truths to our children and to write them on the tablets of their hearts. This is why memorizing scripture is vitally important. If the physical Bible is taken from us, we will still know God's Word.

Activity: Notice the comparison between God's New Covenant Law and the Law given to Moses. A great activity for children (and parents as well) is to cut out a large heart shape from construction paper, and hang it up so you can see. Then, gather a few scriptures you would like to memorize or have your children learn. As you and your children learn these scriptures also write what you learned upon this construction paper heart. Soon the heart will be full & you and your children will have also filled your own hearts within you.

Today's ornament for the Jesse Tree is the symbol of a heart with writing on it. This can be done simply by cutting out a piece of red felt into the shape of a heart & writing scripture upon it or using a toothpick to engrave scripture onto a heart shaped out of clay and then baked. Make sure you make a hole for a string to hang the ornament when done. Or, be creative and get more complex.

Day 17 Advent Jesse Tree

Today is Day 17 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 17 is that of a cross.

The scriptures are Isaiah 53; and

Luke 2:8-18; John 19:11-18 and John 10:15 -"I lay down my life for the sheep."

The Old Testament and the New Testament readings correspond by exposing the meaning of Christmas. We celebrate the birth of a baby only because of that baby's fulfillment of prophecy in the sacrifice on the cross followed up by His resurrection from the dead. He now rules at the right hand of God in heaven. Without this life-ending victory at the cross, there would be no reason to celebrate Christmas. In the words of Dean Lambert:

Little baby in a manger, You came to earth a tiny stranger, But soon the world would know You'd give the greatest gift of love.

You came to earth to die on Calvary Bear the pain and shame to die for me. I can't believe it - but it's so.

For you gave up your throne in glory. All the pow'r of the world was in your hands. You gave up your right to be ruler, You gave it up - to Just Be A Man.

Your kingdom was not to be worldly, Even tho' you could reign throughout the land. Your glory grew dim as a baby, and it was all a part of God's PLAN.

Little baby in a manger, You came to earth a tiny stranger. I found a home for you today, Come in my heart and always stay.

Activity: Consider activities that would typically be done at Easter such as making resurrection rolls.

Today's ornament for the Jesse Tree is the symbol of a cross. A cross can be handmade by tying together two small twigs or in a variety of other ways.

Day 16 Advent Jesse Tree Devotions

Today is Day 16 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 16 is that of a lamb and a staff.

The scriptures are Isaiah 40:11 - He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young;

Psalm 23:1 - The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want; and

John 10:27 - but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.

The Old Testament readings portray Jesus as a good shepherd. He cares for those who love and follow Him like a shepherd cares for his flock of sheep. Sheep follow their shepherd knowing that he will protect them and provide for them in every circumstance. The Isaiah scripture is particularly uplifting and encouraging for mothers and fathers of young children as he promised to gently lead those who have young. It's almost as if He gives us an owners manual when we have young children to guide and instruct. He comes along side us and directs us how to lead them down the right path. If we are believers in Jesus, we will follow him because his sheep know his voice.

Activity: Play follow the leader.

Today's ornament for the Jesse Tree is the symbol of a lion and a lamb. This can be done using a candycane turned upside down (if you want it to last year after year, consider using a candycane ornament) and a sheep. Of course, a sheep can be made in a variety of ways using something white and fluffy such as craft pom poms, etc.

Day 16 Advent Jesse Tree Devotions

Today is Day 15 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 15 is that of a dove and crown.

The scriptures are Isaiah 9:6-7 - For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this; and

John 14:27 - Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.

The Old Testament readings tie in with the New Testament readings in that the promised savior was to bring peace. Out of all the names given to Jesus, Prince of Peace is described in these passages.

Activity: Play games like freeze tag where once a player is tagged, they remain "frozen" in position until all are tagged. This represents sitting still, or in peacefulness.

Today's ornament for the Jesse Tree is the symbol of a dove and a crown. A symbol or ornament of a dove can be found in craft stores. Crowns can be found in little girl dress ups. Use imagination to tie the two together.

Day 14 Advent Jesse Tree

Today is Day 14 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 14 is that of a lion and a lamb. These symbols are also represented in the movie Twilight. But, the propecy of the lion and the lamb lying down together carry deeper significance in connection with Biblical prophecies.

The scriptures are Isaiah 11:6-10; and

Matthew 25:31-46; Revelation 21:1-7; and Philippians 2:9-11

The Old Testament readings tie together with the New Testament readings to show what it will be like when this prophecy is completely fulfilled with the new heaven and the new earth - A place where Jesus sits on a throne next to his Father, God and welcomes in those who love him and did his Will. The Isaiah passage talks about the prophesy of the time when all will be at peace. A child will play next to a viper's hole and not be harmed.

Activity: There is a saying, "March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb." You can study similar sayings as well as this one and learn how a lion is ferocious & a lamb is gentle. Enjoy lion and lamb coloring sheets. Crayola has a fun Lion/lamb craft using your child's handprint. And, here's a handprint craft for the lamb.

Today's ornament for the Jesse Tree is the symbol of a lion and a lamb. An ornament carved out of olive wood can be purchased. Or, you can make your own using variations of the handprint crafts above, use clay, felt or be creative.

Day 14 Advent Jesse Tree

Day 13 Advent Jesse Tree

Today is Day 13 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 13 is that of a stump with fresh shoot or leaf. The picture in this article is one of a tree stump taken from a rain forest. While, it has been uprooted & springs no life; the stump of Jesse with a sprout of green life coming from it is symbolic of the coming savior. This stump - The stump of Jesse - would spring forth life in the form of one who would save the world from all sin.

The scriptures are Isaiah 11:1-5; and

John 1:14 - "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we behelf his glory."

The Old Testament and New Testament readings tie together by showing how, according to the Advent Jesse Tree book:

Although God had to warn His people that they would be cut off for a time because of their sins, the prophet Isaiah sang for them a new song of hope. From their brokenness would shoot forth a New Branch. hrist would be firmly planted in righteousness and justice. Through the family tree of Jesse and David, Jesus, the "Anointed One" would come. This is the literal meaning of Messiah, or Christ..

Activity: Lessons about the Jesse Tree.

Today's ornament for the Jesse Tree is the symbol of a stump with a fresh shoot. You can use your imagination and use clay or a branch with a green piece of felt coming from it. I found an ornament at Grace's Merry Go Round Outlet store for 50 cents that is a brown tree with green wire surrounding it.

Day 13 Jesse Tree Advent Calendar

Day 12 Advent Jesse Tree

Today is Day 12 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 12 is that of a scroll or Bible.

The scriptures are II Kings 23:1-3 which tell about King Josiah finding the scrolls of God's laws in the temple and insisting that the people abide by what the scroll read; and

Psalm 119:105 - "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."

The Old Testament readings show how important it is to abide by God's Words. The people had become lazy and began worshipping idols and such. When Josiah read the law, the Words fell upon them; and, they changed their ways (at least for awhile). Jesus comes to us later as "The Word made flesh."

Activity: Hide something and look for it and have much rejoicing when you find it. Read out of God's word. Maybe, read today's scriptures aloud to the family. Or, try some of these activities from ebibleteacher.com

Today's ornament for the Jesse Tree is the symbol of a scroll or a Bible. This is probably self-explanatory as most of us as children made a scroll of some type as a craft.
Day 12

Day 11 Advent Jesse Tree

Today is Day 11 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 11 is that of a slingshot.

The scriptures are 1 Samuel 16-17 which is the story of little David killing Goliath (a giant who came out against David's God). David would later become king and is in the lineage of the Messiah. He is also well known for his sin with Bathsheba that snowballed into other horrific acts. Yet, he is referred to by God as "A man after God's own heart." Why? Because, when he was confronted with his sin, he didn't say "I'm only a man, what do you expect - I'm human!" Rather, he cried, confessed and repented. He turned from his sin and sought a pure heart before God. He started out as a shepherd boy as he relates later in Psalms 23 - The Lord is my shepherd. The account also tells how the smallest, most insignificant among us can become great in the hands of God.

There is no New Testament readings for today's devotion.

Activity: There is a great Veggie Tales that tells the story of David & Bathsheba in a way that a child can watch. It's called King George and the Ducky. The activities can also involve the part of the story where the slingshot is involved. If you have a safe target, you can practice killing your "giants." Just make sure you use soft ammunition.

Today's ornament for the Jesse Tree is the symbol of a slingshot. You can make this out of a rubberband and a y-shaped small branch or even a wishbone.

Day 11

Friday, December 3, 2010

Day 10 Advent Jesse Tree

Today is Day 10 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 10 is that of a sheaf of wheat.

The scriptures are Ruth 1-4 which is the story of Ruth and her obedience to her God. When her world falls apart, her husband dies leaving her all alone, she sticks with her mother-in-law insisting that "Your people are my people, and your God is my God." The result is she finds a husband, her kinsman redeemer, who ends up in the lineage of Jesus; and

Matthew 1:5 - "Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab, Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse."

The Old Testament and New Testament readings tie together by showing how the obedience of one woman, Ruth, to her God brought about a husband for her who would find himself in the lineage of Jesus Christ the Messiah (through the root of Jesse). In addition to this, the term "kinsmen redeemer" is introduced referring to Boaz, giving us a clear picture of how Jesus redeems us.

Activity: Coloring sheets on Ruth

Today's ornament for the Jesse Tree is the symbol of a sheaf of wheat. All you need to make this ornament is a few sprigs of dried wheat tied with a piece of rafia.

Day 8 Advent Jesse Tree

Today is Day 8 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 8 is that of two stone tablets (the Ten Commandments).

The scriptures are Exodus 1-15, Exodus 20 & Exodus 32:15-18 (the acocunt of the Ten Commandments); and

Psalm 119:11 - "Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You."; and

Galatians 3:19 - "Why, then, was the law given? It was given alongside the promise to show people their sins. But the law was designed to last only until the coming of the child who was promised. God gave his law through angels to Moses, who was the mediator between God and the people."

The Old and New Testament readings tie each other together by explaining that God gave the Law to let people see the fullness of their sins and the consequences of their sins. But, when Christ came - Love conquered all.

Activity: If you have a few hours, sit down with your children and watch the classic movie The Ten Commandments with Charlton Heston. Though, they embelished some parts of the story, it's still a good portrayal of how life must have been for Moses.

Today's ornament for the Jesse Tree is the symbol of two stone tablets (The Ten Commandments). The best way to make these is with Fimo clay from the craft store, roll flat & cut out the shape of the tablets. Then, you can engrave Roman Numberals with a sharp pencil or toothpick. Bake according to instructions on Fimo clay package.

Day 7 Advent Jesse Tree

Today is Day 7 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 7 is that of a colorful coat.

The scriptures are Genesis 37:3-36 and Genesis 50:18-21 which is the account of Joseph being given a special colurful coat. His brothers were jealous so they threw him into a pit and said he was dead. Meanwhile, a slave trader found Joseph and bought him. The story doesn't end there because God had a plan; and

Romans 8:28 - "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God."; and

The Old and New Testament readings tie each other together by explaining that when this bad thing happened to Joseph, God may have seemed far away. But, in fact He was very close to Joseph. He had a plan. His plan was to position Joseph in Egypt where he would eventually become Pharoah's right hand man. This put him in the position of providing food for his family when the terrible famine hit years later. The other part of the plan was to get the Israelites out of the land of Canaan where sin abounded and bring them to the land of Egypt where they would be untouched and allowed to be set apart until their return to the promised land.

Where is God when bad things happen? Some believe He allows bad things to happen and never causes them. Others believe He causes bad things to happen and are angry because of it. The story of Joseph reveals that he possibly does both - Sometimes he allows sin to have its consequences. Other times he may even set up the situtation or use the situation for a better outcome. Regardless of whether God allows bad things or causes bad thing, the Bible describes God as Love. Would you rather serve a God who has a loving plan for your life and calls circumstances in your path for the end result that He orchestrates. Or, would you rather serve a God who has no control over evil and sits back simply allowing chaos to go on in your life? While both points may have scripture to back them up, Romans points out that for those who love Him, all things will work together for good. Ultimately, in the end, if you stay faithful good will come. There is a happy ending to your story.

Activity: DLTK.com

provides several coloring pages, Joseph coat crafts and activities that are a fun way to get this lesson across.

Today's ornament for the Jesse Tree is the symbol of a colorful coat. You can use a doll's shirt & add colorful strips of fabric or cut felt pieces to be hung on the tree.

Day 6 Advent Jesse Tree

Today is Day 6 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 6 is that of a ladder.

The scriptures are Genesis 27:41-28:22 which tells the account of Jacob's dream where he saw a ladder to heaven with angels climbing up and down.

There is no New Testament reading for today's devotion. But, the ladder in Jacob's dream is significant of the connection we now have, open to everyone who believes, of Jesus connecting us to the Father God. The ladder signifies how Jesus left his Heavenly glorious dwelling and descended to earth to become a man. He then died & rose to forever bridge that gap between man (man's sin) and God. The heart of the story is in the first part of the verse Genesis 28:15 where is says:

Remember, I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go..

Activity: Here are some great lesson activities from New Church Vineyard.org. And, if you like to use snacks in your lesson plans, here's a great Jacob's ladder "pretzel ladders" snack and lesson plan from rotation.org.

Today's ornament for the Jesse Tree is the symbol of a ladder. The easiest way to make this ornament is to purchase a wood fence cutout from the craft store or find a dollhouse picket fence & turn it on it's side to look like a ladder. Paint & decorate it how you like. You can even add angels or a light on top to signify God who was at the top of the ladder. Or, be creative with toothpicks, popsicle sticks or felt.

Day 5 Advent Jesse Tree

Today is Day 5 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 5 is that of a lamb.

The scriptures are Genesis 22:1-19 which is the account of God asking Abraham to sacrifice his son, Isaac; and

Isaiah 53:7 - "He was abused and punished, but he didn't open his mouth. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. He was like a sheep that is silent when its wool is cut off. He didn't open his mouth."

John 1:29 - "John saw Jesus coming toward him the next day and said, "Look! This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world."; and

1 Peter 1:19 - "Rather, the payment that freed you was the precious blood of Christ, the lamb with no defects or imperfections."

The Old and New Testament readings tie each other together by explaining that God tested Abraham's faith by asking him to sacrifice the son he had been promised. When God saw that Abraham would obey God even unto death, He stopped the sacrifice of his son and substituted a ram that God had supplied on the mountain. This was a foreshadowing of what would take place with the sacrifice of the promised Messiah, who died to take away the guilt of our sins.

The Advent Jesse Tree book points out:

It is interesting to note that the place Abraham was to sacrifice Isaac (Mt. Moriah) was the exact mountain in Jerusalem where Solomon's temple was built. When Christ died on Calvary, the veil of the Temple was torn, symbolizing the final end of the sacrificial system. Today the Moslem mosque, the Dome of the Rock, is located on this site.

Activity: The lesson and idea of a father being asked to kill a son is a hard one to share with children. It's a difficult concept that sin causes death including the death of an animal for a sacrifice for those sins. But, then add to it that God promises a son to Abraham and then asks him to sacrifice that son. Of course, God knew all along death would not come to Isaac through the hand of his father. It was an ultimate test for Abraham: Would he obey God or did he love the gift of his son, Isaac, more than he loved God who gave the gift. This Bible Lesson by Suite 101 is really a cute way to get this hard lesson across. It has a Red Light, Green Light game and even a recipe for an edible altar.

Today's ornament for the Jesse Tree is the symbol of a lamb. Of course, the first thing that comes to mind in making an ornament of a lamb is cotton balls. So, be creative. There are other options as well. Here's a nice fluffy lamb ornament from Kaboose.com. And, Joshclay.com describes how to make one out of polymer clay.

Day 4 Advent Jesse Tree

Today is Day 4 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 4 is that of a camel and a tent.

The scriptures are Genesis 12:1-7 which is the account of God calling Abram to obey and believe what he is promising and to move to a strange land; and

Hebrews 11:8 - "By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going."

Matthew 1:1 - "This is a record of the birth of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham."

The Old and New Testament readings tie each other together by explaining that Abram's (later his name was changed by God to Abraham which means father of many nations) faith & obedience to leave the land he knew well and travel to a different place he did not know, but God had asked this of him, allowed God to fulfill his promise to give him more children than the stars he could count (in the spiritual realm). We see in Matthew that he was listed as part of the geneology of Jesus, the Messiah because he obeyed & was faithful when God called him.

Activity: A great website that brings lots of Abraham-related activities to light is garden of praise.com.

Of course the game of Simon Says comes to mind - A game in which one person calls out commands such as "hop on one foot." If the words "Simon Says" do not precede the command, the followers are not to do it. This is a good way to get across the lesson of obedience.

Make a Camel in the desert sand picture. Cut out a picture of a camel & glue it to a sheet of sandpaper, then have child color a desert scene on the sandpaper around the camel. Make sure you include a tent to signify Abraham's dwelling.

Today's ornament for the Jesse Tree is the symbol of a camel and a tent. A fun way to make this ornament is with oragami. Scissor Craft.com shows you how. Or, you can cut out a star from cardboard & place a camel & tent shape on top, painting and decorating each one.

Day 3 Advent Jesse Tree - Rainbow Over Noah's Ark

Today is Day 3 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 3 is that of a rainbow over an ark as in Noah's Ark. The scriptures are Genesis 5-9 where you find the story account of Noah and the Ark. It is a lengthy passage, so you can read the story of Noah's Ark from a Children's Bible if you prefer for small children.

The scripture in regard to the promised covenant represented in the rainbow - Joshua 23:14 - "And now I am about to go the way of all the earth, and you know in your hearts and souls, all of you, that not one thing has failed of all the good things that the Lord your God promised concerning you; all have come to pass for you, not one of them has failed."; and

The New Testament scripture: Romans 6:23 - "For the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is] eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

The Jesse Tree ties together the Old and New Testament readings by explaining the result of sin is death. Mankind had become so evil that God was about to destroy them (death). There was one man, however, who was faithful - Noah! Because of his righteousness and faithfulness, God provided a way for this man to be saved from the destruction that was about to take place. He instructed Noah how to build an ark (a big boat) that would save him, his family & animals from the destructive waters that would flood the earth. God, then sent a rainbow to signify His promise to never destroy the entire earth again with a flood. There have been floods since the time of Noah's Ark, but none have covered and destroyed the entire earth such as this one did. God has been true to his promise (rainbow).

In the Old Testament, the ark was what literally saved Noah's life. In the New Testament, that same kind of salvation comes from the Messiah, Jesus in a spiritual form.

Activity: A lot of fun can be done with Noah's Ark. Veggie Tales has a fun DVD out called Minnesota Cuke: In Search of Noah's Umbrella. Another interesting study can begin with reading about a real-life sized (almost) Noah's Ark that was built by a man in the Netherlands. If you have long colorful ribbons, dance around waving your ribbons in praise, forming arches of colorful ribbon rainbows.

The ornament for the Jesse Tree - the symbol of a rainbow over an Ark could be made with clay as you did with the ornament of the earth. This would involve many beautiful colors and the forming of a rainbow, then use brown clay to form the shape of an ark. Or, you could cut out pieces of felt in the shape of an ark and bend colorful pipe cleaners or ribbon in the shape of a rainbow over top. Another fun idea is to purchase wooden cutouts of Noah's Ark. Paint it, decorate it & then add the colorful ribbons on top as a tree hangar.

Gingerbread House Decorating

In America, making gingerbread houses are a Christmas tradition. Some households may not even feel as though the holiday is complete without the building and decorating of a gingerbread house. They come in all forms and sizes from a simple house made out of gingerbread look-alike, Graham crackers which are "glued" against a small milk carton with frosting to several stories tall elaborate castles and other designs that are often designed by master chefs and pastry artists and displayed in shopping malls.  Some of these intricate designed houses are even auctioned off for chari... Day 2 Jesse Tree Advent Calendar

Most people are aware of Advent - The anticipation of the coming of an exciting event (or Christmas). But, there is an additional way to bring the excitement of the season home and into history of prophesies. The Jesse Tree is based upon prophecies from the Old Testament and how they relate to the New Testament Christ. It is based on the scripture that reads: Isaiah 11:1: "A shoot will spring forth from the stump of Jesse, and a branch out of his roots."

Today is Day 2 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 2 is that of an apple.

The scriptures are Genesis 3:1-20, 23 which tells a detailed account of the very first sin;

Isaiah 53:6 - "We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.";

Isaiah 59:2 - "But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear."; and

John 1:8-10 - "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us."

The Old and New Testament readings tie each other together by explaining the beginning of sin and the start of God's redemptive plan. Genesis 3:15 - "And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel." sets the plot between good vs. evil - Sin vs. Salvation as God speaks to Satan about the coming Messiah whom will later be born of a woman then die to conquer sin and death.

Activity: Though, the Bible does not specify that the forbidden fruit was an apple, this has long been the symbol from the first sin in the Garden of Eden. Possibly a shame to be used since an apple is truly good for us with many health benefits. Today's apple ornament for the Jesse Tree could be made with clay as you did with the ornament of the earth. Or, you could be creative and cut out pieces of red/green felt in the shape of an apple making a simple or complex design. Or, you could make a long-lasting apple cinnamon ornament.

To teach the impact of sin, here is a cute, though messy, lesson experiment on sin and Christ's cleansing power. The web site Answers in Genesis provides a detailed lesson from the prophecy in Genesis 3:15.

Day 1 Jesse Tree/Advent Calendar

This is Day 1 of the 25 days of December that lead up to and include Christmas. One way to celebrate is Advent. Advent is an anticipation of an exciting coming event. The birth of Jesus is such an event. Though, no one knows the exact date of the Messiah. But, December 25 is the date set by a group of Catholic Christians to celebrate Christ's birth. Though no one knows the exact date of his birth, and there is even controversy among some that Christmas should not even be celebrated at all because it was actually a pagan holiday that was reclaimed by the church. Still, the prophecies that surround the birth of Jesus remain pure and can be observed by the practice of The Jesse Tree. The Jesse Tree is based upon prophecies from the Old Testament and how they relate to the New Testament Christ. It is based on the scripture that reads: Isaiah 11:1: "A shoot will spring forth from the stump of Jesse, and a branch out of his roots."

These devotional lessons are a wonderful way to present Biblical history, Jewish heritage, art and reading together in 25 short lessons - One each day leading up to Christmas. It would also be a great topic for unit study lapbook or notebooking activity which develop writing skills.

Today is Day 1 of the Advent Calendar Jesse Tree devotions. The symbol, or ornament, for Day 1 is that of a world. Some devotionals use a dove instead to symbolize peace. Others use a world with a dove hovering above.

The scriptures are Genesis 1:1 - In the beginning was the world & the world was formless; and

John 1:1-4 - And He was with God in the beginning.

The Old and New Testament readings tie each other together by placing Jesus with God in the beginning, even before the world was formed.

Activity: Get some blue and green modeling clay - unformed, have the students form into a ball with the white (clouds) and blue (water) and/or green (land) mixed to form a world of sorts. The students will be able to see a formless piece of clay become the shape of a world. If you bake your creation properly, adding a small hole for hanging string, you can use this as your first ornament on your Jesse Tree.

History and Faith - What is an Advent Jesse Tree?

The time has arrived - The most wonderful time of the year, as it has been described in song. It's also referred to as advent season - What is advent? It's the days before Christmas when the coming of Christ's birth is celebrated. Most Christians, even non-Christians, have heard of an Advent Calendar where you open up a window each day and receive a small treat of chocolate candy or otherwise. One window is opened each day until Christmas Eve. There are many versions of these calendars.

One twist on the Advent Calendar that brings the Old Testament prophecies to New Testament meaning is called the Jesse Tree. The Jesse Tree is based on the Old Testament prophecy that the Messiah will come - "A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots." Each day a short devotional is read connecting a Biblical prophecy and passage from the Old Testament with the coming of Christ, His birth and Christmas.

By using the Jesse Tree during Advent time, it is a great way to bring Biblical history to life in your daily lesson planning. This type of lesson can be logged for homeschoolers as history or religious studies, or both. You can even incorporate art and have the children design their own ornaments. Be creative with your ornaments. You can just color some downloadable pictures or purchase pre-made ornaments or use your creativity in being as elaborate as you like with your ornament design.

There are several ways to go about using the Jesse tree. One of my favorites is a book entitled The Advent Jesse Tree where you actually place a different ornament on a Christmas tree each day as you read the devotional lesson that corresponds. It's a small hard cover green book that fits easily into your hands. Another book that follows purely Advent and not so much of the Jesse Tree symbols but still connects Advent with prophesy is Countdown to Christmas: Devotions for Families by Laura K. E. Zimmerman.
